We stayed at the Hyatt Beach Club which is about 3 miles from downtown last month. Great location and you can use the Hyatt facilities at the end of Duval for the cost of Parking.
2 King room suites great pool and hot tub. BUT very Quiet!

Try the Marquesa Hotel or the Curry Mansion. Both are top rated, very upscale, and more private than the big hotels. Both hotels are in the heart of old town.

ocean key house has spectacular sunset views,as does la concha, if you want to party, and be stumbling distance to your room, try to stay on duval, but watch out for the rainbow establishments, they are farther down on duval,(800 block) and there are still alot of cottages that are "romantic" and still near duval

Depends on what your looking for and how much you want to spend. The Westin next to Mallory Square you could go either way. Sunset Key cottages on the small island across from the harbor is very quiet and away from the craziness of Duval. Or you can stay in a room right off Mallory square.
