What to do? 525 way to much for new boat.

No offense, but this is just crazy.
I understand the 525 is overkill, but in a year and once you're used to it, you'll wish you still had the power.
Stay off the throttle for now and play with the prop. B Blades and Throttle Up can help you get the boat under control with their prop selections.
I really think you would regret swapping out in the long run.

The folks that say keep the 525 knoiw what they speak...especially if it is a 525EFI.
Not sure what Velocity you have. I had a late 80's (1989 I'm almost positive) Velocity 23 built by Regal. It was basically the 22' with a higher deck for a more usable cabin... Boat had a 454 Mag, Bravo 1, and Latham hydrualic steering.
The boat chine walked like crazy, until I figured out it needed the drive trimmed out more than I ever expected. This would often cause it to porpoise moderatly, but the trimming out of the drive really calmed down the chine walk.

The motor has 101 hours, and is a carbed version 525SC not EFI. Old owner claims you need to run 93 octane, Not sure why. Just going by what he says. He spent $25000 alone on the boat. It is just pristine.
I know Ill end up regreting taking the 525 out and should really think long and hard about making a snap decision.
If I did get rid of it, is it worth $15000-$20000 and could I get into a Standard 496 for $10,000ish?

You guys are brutal, but pretty damn funny. I am a speed freek on the snow/ice and have owned 350HP snowmobiles, but this is pretty new to me and safety is my primary concern. It looks like you guys think Im nuts and should really defer to you with the experience. I really appreciate all the great input...BBY

One more thing:
I would definately agree that 88 in a 24 foot boat would be terribly scary. I would never do that. My Scarab 22 does about 67 and that is almost scary in a 22 foot boat.
But again, reprop and cut it down to 70 or so. You would have mind-blowing holeshot and insane mid-range! Man, that boat would be a blast!

There are two 496 engines.
The 496HO is rated at 425HP.
The 496 Mag is rated at 375HP.
The 496HO, 496 Mag, and 525EFI, ALL require 87 Octane, and that's it. They actually run worse with HIGHER octane.
You DEFINITELY want the 496HO. Its got some better parts to it, and its more mainstream.
Also, you are going to have to re-prop the boat, which could be $400 used to $1000 new; so make sure you add that into your calculations.
You might try talking to Tyler Crockett at http://www.crockettmarineengines.com/
He is very knowledgeable about Velocities AND engine computers. He might could detune the computer on your 525EFI. That way, all you need is a reprogram to have it back to full power.

Put hydraulic steering on the boat and go out and run it. You will see a big difference. The boat is very driveable with big power, but it is a drivers boat past 80mph. I have seen some 23's in the mid 90's. Just takes some seat time before you would be comfortable. I would not drive the boat over 75 without hydraulic steering though.

I retract my offer to swap.
You have a 525SC which is a 454 with a blower on top.
Mercury Racing currently makes a 525EFI which is a Fuel Injected 502 that makes better than 535 horsepower without a blower. I think most folks thought you had a 525EFI.
Just pull the blower off of they 525SC. Keep it in the garage for when you want to sell or go faster. You will need a mechanic to retune carb and you will need to re-prop. I don't know what octane fuel you will need.
