Don't worry. You'll get your share of freshwater sharks.
They are mutating and finding their way farther and farther inland every year. Swimmers will become an endangered species.

They dont need to mutate. Its not too uncommon in western austrialia to have shark swim up the rivers, and there was that 9' Bull shark caught in St. Luis.

while we were in Destin this year for the worlds my self ad a few friends decided to swim out to the sandbar to watch the races a bit closer. as my one buddy waded in he got about to his waist and stoped and said " ya know i dont think i like not being at the top of the food chain anymore . . . you guys go on. i'm stay'in on the beach" we kinda laughed an gave him a bit of chit about it. the next day we watched the race from Jokers (Brian H) condo on the 14th floor and we could see a few dark and somewhat large shapes moving around in the shallow parts . . . . .we were told by a local that sharks and large rays are pretty plentiful there.

In the Florida Keys I had our family out in a 16 foot jet boat when my daughter spots a couple fins breaking the waters surface. We went to see the dolphins and it was a 12 foot hammerhead shark! The thing was as long as the jet boat, that will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

We went fishing on a 56' boat for cobia, and what we saw as we went from Destin to Panama city was plenty of sharks swimming close to shores, you could see them crystal clear as everyone was swimming close to the beaches. I will never , never go out to deep, it makes me somewhat nervous even when at crab island after the poker run. Jeff

HONOLULU - A woman snorkeling off Maui was bitten in the leg by a shark Monday, about an hour after a nearby beach was closed due to a report of a shark bumping a surfer.

The woman, whose name was not released, sustained injuries to her foot and calf and was taken to a hospital. The injuries were not life threatening, Maui County spokeswoman Mahina Martin.

The attack occurred off Keawakapu Beach in Kihei. It was reported at 8:34 a.m. by a bystander on the beach. The size and type of shark was not immediately known.

At 7:30 a.m., a surfer reported that his friend's surfboard was bumped by what appeared to be a tiger shark about a mile and a half away, prompting a closure of that beach and a shark alert by the county.

"Normally, what happens in a shark sighting is they close that front area and a one mile up and down the beach," Martin said.

After the attack, the closure was expanded to a four-mile stretch of beach.

There were four shark attacks in Hawaii in 2006. None were fatal.

There are about 40 species of sharks that live in Hawaiian waters, but the most frequently encountered are the tiger, whitetip reef, sandbar, and scalloped hammerhead sharks, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

I remember swimming out to a sand bar off Nag's Head in NC. The swim between the beach and the sand bar, where the water is black and deep, is where I swim as fast as humanly possible. On a boogie board of course.
