Surface Drive on Single Engine Boat?

Just curious...are surface drives ever used on single engine boats? It seems like the prop would try to crawl the boat sideways, since there would be a sideforce from the half of the prop which is in the water.

yes there are... ask geoo about how his donzi that he had ran with it..... he probably had the Fastest 18' single in the country

TUFFboat 05-08-2007 06:38 AM

All the little outboard boats are dealing with that. 120mph Alisons and 140mph STVs. These are boats with no weight so the problems are greater that an I/O, there are some issues but still it works fine.

Airpacker 05-08-2007 06:42 AM

Mercury HAD the answer to that problem, it was called the Black Hawk drive. Counter rotating surface drive. Ya, it works. Too bad it was discontinued.

ain that the truth, same with the Volvo DPX. great drive and now no longer avaliable. we are looking into putting a Blackhawk on a Cig 20 should be a nice setup.

Python82 has a surface drive on his 24 python.

Some NewJersey Avanti's(22's & 27's) were built with KAAMA's.

Michael

i was think'in they might be a handfull as well but they do have a pretty healthy skeg on them. anybody ever seen the Rumblefish? that thing has a trimax style single surface drive and i had heard its a handfull (thats just rumor around the pits though)

We (engine and drive distributor) built a light 19' Youngblood with a 400 hp small block and a single drop-box Arneson: in 1980. It handled like it was on rails, it pulled the kids skiing, ran over 100 mph, and surprised a lot of BBC jet boats!

The Youngblood was later sold to a guy who installed a 600 hp big block and he successfully ran the boat in drag bracket racing for years.

Glassdave,

There's a 20' Cig in Cincinnati w/a Blackhawk. Hear it's pretty quick. Owned by Phil Lipshutz's brother.

Locally there is a black 85 or 86 Formula 242 with a single kaama drive. I don't think he was ever happy with the setup he had.

Doesn't Masher's canoe "Slim Shady" have a single #6?

I've seen a few used Blackhawks around at reasonable prices. I'd heard some pretty negative comments related to skeg length and steering carachteristics, but frankly I don't know crap about them.

Michael, sorry we didn't hook up while I still had my 24! I hope your search is going well!

cosmic12 05-08-2007 04:04 PM

what happened to the Pulse drive???? They were around for a while then poof gone, Only saw 1 on some 26/28 ft canopy boat around 10 yrs ago , it was a single

Python82 05-08-2007 04:08 PM

I love the Arneson on my 24! At some point I would like to consider them for my Pantera. It's alot of fun to drive and the rooster tail is sweet.

BTW
The 24 is going up for sale

We converted a 21' jet boat to Arneson when I was young. It had a single big block with twin Gale Banks turbos. The boat picked up 20 MPH overnight. It did begin to slightly pull to one side above 90+ MPH. We got use to it, but never stayed wide open very long.

Its all in the set up. My Daytona handles like its on rails at speed. I wouldn't want to make any panic turns at 90 plus because the skeg could lose contact with the water if a sponson hooks though. You get a feel for where the "edge" is after some seat time and learn to drive it there. Slower speed corners would scare the pants off ya. It will slam you into the side of the seat and just track right thru the corner.

Dude! Sweet! 05-09-2007 05:54 PM

A buddy of mine was pretty down on them. I've never even seen them in person. I was thinking about it for my old 24 Pantera. Like I said, I don't know crap! :chimp:

Shore Thing 05-10-2007 07:34 AM

there was a 38 powerplay with pulse drives last year wasn't there?

As far as single engines go, there's a turbine 30y2k superboat turbine being built now with a single sage drive. And (I forget his name) a guy with a 280 velocity just put an arneson on the back and last I heard he was really happy with the performance.

masher44 05-10-2007 08:46 AM

My drive now sits two inches above the bottom of the boat and the ride is amazing. It has been over a year of trying different drive heights and props to get this thing running lights out..... but well worth it

I am planning to install a arneson drive on a 30 foot intrepid, with a 340 Yanmar diesel, does any one recommends someone in Miami or nearby to do this install job?
I cant wait to see this open baby fly.

Thanks in advance,

Please advice the companies that you may know, to call me at 305-790-7892. Thanks again.

Any ideas on a TRS swap to Kaamas or Arnesons? Pros and cons? Price wise?
