Default Surface Drive on Single Engine Boat?

Just curious...are surface drives ever used on single engine boats? It seems like the prop would try to crawl the boat sideways, since there would be a sideforce from the half of the prop which is in the water.

All the little outboard boats are dealing with that. 120mph Alisons and 140mph STVs. These are boats with no weight so the problems are greater that an I/O, there are some issues but still it works fine.

Mercury HAD the answer to that problem, it was called the Black Hawk drive. Counter rotating surface drive. Ya, it works. Too bad it was discontinued.

We (engine and drive distributor) built a light 19' Youngblood with a 400 hp small block and a single drop-box Arneson: in 1980. It handled like it was on rails, it pulled the kids skiing, ran over 100 mph, and surprised a lot of BBC jet boats!

The Youngblood was later sold to a guy who installed a 600 hp big block and he successfully ran the boat in drag bracket racing for years.
