Garden Sprayers to Change Drive Oil

How many are using garden sprayers (the type you pump up) to change your drive oil? Or should I just use the old push pump on the 2.5 gallon jug.

Larry D 05-09-2007 04:21 PM

thats what we use ( garden sprayer)

TSPM 05-09-2007 04:31 PM

Us too ...........

mbones 05-09-2007 05:14 PM

the hand pump on a 5 gal bucket workes good for me

Sydwayz 05-09-2007 06:00 PM

I rigged up a garden sprayer and it works like a champ.

gsmith9898 05-09-2007 08:58 PM

how do you use the garden sprayer?

mtgbiker 05-09-2007 09:17 PM

a tire valve mounted in the sprayer that you pump up with your air compressor works good and saves a lot of hand pumping :)

Yep. Same here with the garden sprayer.

Just cut off the metal end of the sprayer (leaving the valve intact, of course), zip-tie the clear plastic hose with the drive's screw-in fitting onto the end, and viola! And as mtgbiker mentioned, you can drill a hole into the canister and install a tire valve so you can fill it with compressed air and not have to pump. Works awesome.

Something like the pic below.

Oh, and this sprayer tool also works excellent for bleeding brakes on your truck! ;)

slap the word "marine" on the side of that and market it for $64.99.

I use a 5 gallon bucket and the lid with a big pump on it....but my drives take 4.5 gallons each. It works quite well for me.

I have one that I converted and replaced the pickup tube inside the tank with a larger diameter pipe for better flow rate. If someone doesn't want to go through the hassle of making one I will sell my setup for $25 plus shipping. It is the modified tank and hose. All you need to do is add the fitting for the drive (take from your old hand pump model).

nice!!! I'm going to make one soon:)

I love American enginuity. That's a great idea. How tricky is it to drill and install the tire valve without leaking air? Is it a rubber valve stem, or something more rigid?

Sydwayz 05-10-2007 11:01 AM

Rick, get a chrome rigid valve stem from an auto parts store or wheel shop. They have a nut that you tighten over the stud squishing two rubber washers together for a tight seal.

Drill the hole, and remove the shavings. Then affix the valve stem to a piece of wire and fish it through the hole from the inside.

I installed the valve stem on my self-winterization 5 gallon antifreeze jug. I pressurize the jug before I start the motor and the air pressure force feeds the SWP with AF so there are no priming issues. It works great! I posted pictures of this setup some time back. Keep the compressor running while you winterize the motor on the final few moments and it keeps the AF flowing the entire time.

No problem with the valve stem. Get a mororcycle valve stem(at any auto parts store), they through bolt and will hold a good seal. I'm using one like this, and I added garden hose rubber gaskets on either side of the canister wall.

Oops. Sydwayz beat me to it. :)

The pisser is when you take it out of the cold garage and put it in the warm truck without cracking the fill neck open....The heat pushes the damn fluid right out onto the carpet......Works great though. I wish i had thought of the air valve sooner...

Does the oil affect the o-rings and rubber parts inthe sprayer?

MikeyFIN 05-13-2007 06:21 AM

I have a similar system with a small portable 12v compressor.
And yes there´s sprayers made for solvents too, they are meant to stand oils and gasoline.

akaboatman 12-14-2011 07:43 AM

I've been using the sprayer for years. Works great

Jeff H 12-17-2011 08:32 PM

HP,

I got the Hudson sprayer with Viton seals. been using it for years no issues and compared to the comercial "marine" ones you can see the fluid level in it.
I also use a air line quick dissconnect so I can thread in the adapter then connect the hose and valve..

Great minds think alike. I was doing this over 10 years ago. Especially helpful on Jet Ski winterization. You only need about 20 psi of air pressure. I also made an adapter to screw into the master cylinder on the boat trailer, and bleed the brakes on the trailer in the same fashion, I use about 40 psi on this. Works great.
