Living at Lake Havasu

Have really been feeling a need for a change in scenery. Looking into a position as Medical Director of the ED in Lake Havasu City. No details yet, but wanted to get pros and cons of living there full time.

Would eventually need someplace with generous storage for 38 Formula, 30 ft RV, duallie and a couple vettes currently stored in 30 X 70 building.

Never been there.... But, the desert has never looked like an appealing place to leave IMO. I would move to North Carolina/South Carolina/Tennesee area. The boating and scenery there is second to none and the people are really nice.

I would post over at www.hotboat.com - Lots of Havasu regulars are over there

Slipped my boat there on summer, you better like the HEAT

BajaFresh 05-17-2007 07:44 PM

No problem on storage, lots of homes with RV/boat garages. Lots of additional storage too. Fun place but has some strange politics, small town stuff. Also a lot of snow birds vs boater battles.

Very different from Ohio. Hot, hot, hot in summer and dry. Not a lot of trees or greenery. Great poker run though! :)

2 hour drive to Vegas!

dude, you can go anywhere...life is short U know that.

I was thinking about buying a place there last year and spent a week there at the Nautical Inn. I have a place in CO. and wanted to be a days drive between the boats and skiing but didn't like it. It reminded me of Nags Head,N.C. except in the desert. The lake is beautiful but you can't build a house and put a pier in(which i have here) so that means boat ramp every weekend:eek: Crowded boat ramps and to many RVs for me and like Bajafresh said it seems real small town with lots of politics. But if you like heat its awesome. We were there in April and it was in the 90s every day and 75 every night  Spend some time there and decide if its for you.

it is a mis-managed city with no foresight period. Between the ineptitude of the BLM to remedy matters pertaining to the one marina and there failure to build additional marinas to support the boating numbers and the weak city council passing measures on all other points that do not matter and worried more about people showing skin than keeping the life blood tourism dollar spending patrons accomodated.
Case in point is thompson bay and the fact they could easily put a 1000 slip marina complex there with plenty of navagable room to spare but it will never happen. Nobody wants to launch and retrieve 3 times in a weekend, it's BS.
As for living there, i would advise Vegas, you can pick up homes dirt cheap now as foreclosures are on the rise there bigtime, L.A, and Havasu are both close then as well as CO.

The political thing is a big concern. As medical director of the ED, I would be dealing with this on a daily basis. Can't say I am innately politically saavy, just been around a lot and have seen many things done differently and know what works and what doesn't, at least in the medical field.

Downtown42 05-18-2007 09:22 AM

I'd ck out LOTO...

Fresh water, home with docks and toys.

I think you're too scared to move down here with the big kids.....:evilb:

Since you're from the LOTO area and are probably missing some teeth, you will fit right in with the locals! :D

Greg,

Would love too! Just that us docs that save the rest of the world don't make enough to pay the property insurance for a postage stamp lot on the water. :(

Still plan to visit again soon, though!:D

Nort,

Have heard some less than desirable things about the locals in Havasu. What can you tell me about this?

Looking for someone spunky and fun, but with a little class I can have a conversation with afterwards.

Thought there would be transients out of Vegas/LA to hook up with out there ... ?

MikaylaHunterCig 05-18-2007 04:57 PM

Since our vacation house was completed almost two years ago we have spent about every other weekend there and have become very familiar with the area.
It is was it is - it can be a very beatiful place for the boater and the ramp situation is easy to figure out.
Could be a great change of pace

Well, if you do go and try it out, rent something first, don't buy. There are plenty of nice homes there for sale and it's a BIG TIME buyers market. I just sold a house that I bought two years ago. It took seven months to do it and I only got a few grand more than I paid. So, rent first, other wise you'll get stuck with the property.

Are you single? There aren't a lot of quality single women who want to live isolated out in the middle of the desert. Dating is bad enough in Los Angeles. I can't even imagine what Havasu would be like.

From the time I've spent there it's slow kind of "local yocal". The restaurants are slow and basic except for Shagrue's and maybe a few others (I'm guessing there are more good restaurants). Definately hot even for a Phoenician. Plus'-it is fun and beautiful in it's own way. Plenty of great boating and fun people.

I've lived in LA for the past 20 years, and I've done most of my boating in Havasu. Seriously considered moving there recently. All previous pros/cons comments apply. Ended up moving to KC last August, and am looking foward to LOTO going foward. Much different from Havasu, and has its own issues, but is very nice overall -- and you can purchase lakefront property (not the case in Havasu). OK, so it snows and gets cold out here during the winter -- but it's not prolonged, and you can be back on the water in April.

Have spent considerable time looking for lakefront homes at LOTO, and just purchased one. Obviously better RE values in this part of the country compared to out West,....and I can confirm that there are plenty of folks out here with teeth...just like you and me.

I own two businesses in Havasu. The people are down to earth and boating is a lifestyle... not just a hobby. You learn what weekends to go out on the water and what weekends to play in the pool. We could use a few good doctors...(We could use a few okay doctors). I would spend a week and make sure it is for you before making the move. Vegas is two hours away and getting closer with the new bridge. Storage for toys is no problem. Buy a house with a 4000sqft garage so you can keep your pride and joy on the premises. Feel free to call when you are coming to town and I can give you a tour

Thanks for the input Matt. Will try to find some time to visit, and will definately let you know if I can make it out there to look around. Haven't heard anything back from the recruiters yet.
