mercruiser 420

can anyone tell me if it is worth putting money into a pair of mercruiser 420 hp motors with 1000 hrs or just replace them with a pair of 540ci 650hp motors?:evilb:

how much cost the 540? I spent 6k per engine in mine last year, every thing is new except crank, rod and head casting, even got new intakes!

The 454/420's had all good parts in them. It's a question of how much you want to spend.

I have the same dilemma. I have a pair of ’89 420’s with 852hours on them. One is running the other needs a rebuild in my F311. She, and I am sitting it out this summer until I figure out what to do with her. I am considering a pair of race 650’s in front of the B&W / TRS setup. Then in a few years swap out the engines into something like a Formula 37ss and put the 415 mpi’s in the Formula and flog it. It is in mint shape too! Sorry, I am of no help just flapping.

the boat was a fresh water boat from Arizona spent a couple years in NJ. looking to get more power. will a set of super chargers hurt the motors all that much?

did you have a marina do the work or did you have a private motor rebuilder do the work? and you bought the parts.
