LOL....happy birthday Joker. You're just agreeing T2X since you are from the snobby East Coast.

I guess I need to read more about this EarthRace project since I must have missed the part about them giving a loaded gun to a baby.

Earthrace Forced to Abandon Record Attempt

“We gave it our best shot”
Earthrace will no longer be able to break the record,
the decision has been made to abandon the race.

Malaga, Spain – 31 May 2007 – On Wednesday May 30, 2007 the Earthrace powerboat was forced to abandon its world record attempt to circumnavigate the globe. The Earthrace vessel and crew are in Malaga, Spain.

The Earthrace boat suffered structural damage to its main hull during its crossing of the Mediterranean Sea. During this crossing she encountered a vicious storm on route from Port Said, Egypt to Malaga, Spain. This was the third severe weather system that Earthrace had endunred in 3 weeks, the other two being a monsoon off the southern coast of India and 50 knot head winds encountered traveling up the Red Sea. It appears these severe conditions, collectively, have taken their toll on the Earthrace boat.

Prior to Earthrace arriving in Malaga, the crew noticed the boat was taking on water in the forward section of the main hull. Upon investigation, a 2m crack was found in the floor of the hull. While in Malaga the crew made an initial repair, and it was thought to be sufficient to finish the race; however, shortly after the boat left for the Canary Islands the crew concluded that the repair would not hold and so the decision was made to return to Malaga to undergo more substantive repairs. Given the time that it will take to properly repair the hull, Earthrace will no longer be able to break the record, and so the decision has been made to abandon the race.

Earthrace skipper Pete Bethune said “ The whole team is pretty devastated right now. We have all put so much time, money, and effort into this record attempt; it is pretty upsetting to have to abandon the race. We can all feel proud of what we have achieved with the limited resources we had, and we do take some heart from that”

Bethune went on to shot “We gave it our best shot.” “The Earthrace project was created to promote the awareness and use of alternative fuels such as biodiesel. And whilst it is disappointing to miss out on the world record, we have certainly succeeded in our overall aim of promoting biodiesel, and we will continue to build on this success during our upcoming European promotional tour”

Bethune has not ruled out having another crack at the record sometime in the future, perhaps as early as March 2008.

Bethune said “Our focus right now is to repair the boat and come to terms with what has happened. After that we plan to take the boat up to Valencia to offer our support to the New Zealand America's Cup campaign before embarking on our European promotional tour”

The Earthrace boat was attempting to break the world record for a powerboat to circumnavigate the globe, and was doing this using biodiesel fuel – a fuel sourced from vegetable oils.

Earthrace began its record attempt on April 7 from San Diego, California and had to finish in San Diego on or before 21 June to break the record of 75 days – set by the British boat Cable & Wireless in 1998.

Default And about that little financial issue......................

Earthrace Announces European Promotional Tour

Valencia, Spain – June 4, 2007 – Earthrace has announced plans for a European promotional tour.

The Earthrace Project is presently making plans to visit up to 40 European cities during an upcoming promotional tour covering the next 8 months. The showpiece of the tour is a revolutionary and spectacular-looking, biodiesel-powered boat – simply called Earthrace.

Earthrace was built to attempt to break the world record for circumnavigation of the globe by a powerboat. Earthrace began its record attempt on April 7 from San Diego, California with the goal to finish in San Diego on or before 21 June 2007 to break the record of 75 days – set by the British boat Cable & Wireless in 1998. However the boat suffered storm damage just prior to arriving in Malaga, Spain and was forced to abandon the attempt. Earthrace was on track to break the record prior to withdrawing from the race.

Earthrace crew is presently considering another attempt at the world record for March 2008.

The purpose of the upcoming European promotional tour is to promote the awareness and use of alternative fuels such as biodiesel. During each stopover the public will have chance to meet the crew and step aboard the Earthrace vessel.

The boat’s skipper, Pete Bethune, believes that Earthrace has a great opportunity to nourish and grow the European biodiesel industry, as well as to advance biodiesel as a genuinely viable alternative to petroleum diesel.

Bethune said “The vision of a world using fuel produced from sustainable sources is an idea whose time has come. By demonstrating the power, reliability and environmental safety of biodiesel, Earthrace is committed to transforming this vision into reality”.

Earthrace will be visiting a mix of major port cities as well as small port towns – examples of some early stopovers being:

Cork and Dublin (Ireland).
Cardiff (Wales)
Plymouth and London (England)
Edinburgh and Shetland Islands (Scotland)
Brest (France)
Bergen and Oslo (Norway)
Lisbon (Portugal)
Copenhagen (Denmark).
Stockholm and Gothenburg (Sweden)
Helsinki (Finland)
Rostock, Kiel and Hamburg (Germany)
Amsterdam (Netherlands)
Antwerp (Belgium)
Vlissingen (Netherlands)

Earthrace will likely begin its promotional tour in late June in Cork, Ireland, but will make an announcement closer to the time.

Earthrace Back on Track

Sagunto-Valencia, Spain-26 June 2007-Earthrace repairs almost complete

“Repairs to the hull damage which forced Earthrace to abandon her world record attempt to circumnavigate the globe, are almost complete.” reports Earthrace Chief Engineer Scott Fratcher

Fratcher said that key supporters stepped forward at just the right time, including TYCO’s, Pepe Tames, who provided temporary dock space for Earthrace in the commercial Port of Valencia, just next to the America’s Cup Harbor.

Whilst moored at the TYCO dock, Earthrace attracted the attention of Juan Pablo Molina Martinez, Director General of the newly opened Vulkan Shipyard, who was immediately taken with the unusual boat; he offered the services of his Shipyard and Sponsorship to help get Earthrace back on track for the European Tour. Lucky for Earthrace, Vulkan Shipyard just happened to have a brand new 300T, extra wide travel lift, its 10 meter width easily accommodated the tri-hulled vessel.

Following inspection of the damage up close, an advisory team was consulted including; Craig Loomes Yacht Design, Calibre Boat Builders, both of New Zealand, Germanischer Lloyd Group and of course Skipper Peter Bethune. A plan of action was determined and the team in Sagunto set to work.

Sourcing materials proved to be the next challenge, and what better place to find Carbon Fiber, Kevlar, Resins and talent, than in the compounds serving the America’s Cup challengers. The South African Team Shosholoza supported Earthrace with some materials and the talent to effect the critical repairs, in the person of Riaan Alers.

“We were so fortunate to hook up with Riaan, he is one miracle worker; the guy moves so fast the locals stand back in awe. South Africans are known in the marine trades around the world to be “missioners,” they get the work done,” Scott beamed, “this would not be going as smooth without his help.”

Upon viewing photos of the work underway, Andre Moltschaniwskyj of CLD, commented, “…the South African guys ….are doing a beautiful job…we couldn’t ask for a tidier bit of workmanship…”

DIAB, the original sponsor of the foam core for the hull was quick to support Earthrace by sending 6 sheets of the newest material from their headquarters in Sweden.

Local talent joining the team also include brothers Steve and John Rodriguez who have not only put the crew up, but have been hands on with the repairs project; and Joan Rocabert, of Mellow Design who secured sponsorship of a new “flexi-teek” decking material by Yahis. Joan will join the boat crew as Engineer on the upcoming tour, Pete Trezise, aka Ghandi, will remain, joined by Susie Sunshine, her friend Donna, while Adrian Erangey of Ireland rounds out the current boat crew.

Once the repairs have been completed, likely with the next week, Earthrace will be back on track to promote the awareness and use of renewable fuels.

“The upcoming promotional tour program and ports of call will be posted shortly when we have a firm launch date.” says logistics coordinator Allison Thompson, “We intend to get underway and head north as soon as Earthrace is launched, look for us initially in the Baltic starting 19 July at the Halmstad, Maritime Festival.”

At each Port of Call it is the mission of Earthrace to:

Promote awareness, education and use of renewable fuels

Film positive marine environmental initiatives

Provide voyages for supporters and sponsors

Showcase sponsor products and services

Display renewable fuel information

Provide public tours of the boat

Meet the public
