Go fast vs Cruiser

Testing the waters here ,
my wife keeps bugging me to make the change to cruiser style boat and get rid of the Go Fast :(

i'm not looking forward to the pain in the but process of selling my boat so i figured i'd give this a try

i'm sure people cruise these forums that are thinking of getting into the sport , so here goes

would anyone be interested in trading a medium size cruiser (25 to 28 foot single engine)
for a nice entry level go fast ,
its an 88 checkmate enforcer , 24 foot , 454 bravo 1
23 mirage plus prop
needs a good compounding and wax , but all the spring service has been done (impellor, oil change , fuel filter , drive oil , etc etc )
sitting on a decent trailer too :)

i apologize if i put this in the wrong section
if anyone is interested PM me for some pics

my eyes are tearing up a bit as i hit the submit button

Boy does that story sound familiar. :(

My wife wants a cruiser too. :argue:

I don't think she will be happy with that either. So, I'm just going to keep what i have.

my girlfriend just wants a bigger go fast. i got it made...

ENFORCER24 05-18-2007 10:14 AM

I envy all the couples out there that share the love of the sport
i unfortunatly have to play the comprimise game , maybe someday i'll own both

Funny one .....After years of hearing my wife want a cruiser this year I said fine I'll suprise her....Got a deal lined up on a 33 Dancer...Asked my wife what do you think of this deal...And to my suprise my wife and kids (2 girls) said no way we like gofast now......GOOD FOR ME.....Just hold out they'll come around...

My wife would probably settle for a bigger go-fast. I'm happy with what I have, it's paid for, economical to run, and is big enough for the waters I frequent. I can certainly afford a bigger boat but don't really feel the need too.

That was us. First time out. Weather has sucked since. Come say Hi when you see us and we'll buy you a cocktail. We should be on the Sea Ray Memorial weekend at Gilligan's (if Colton's Point ever gets done with it).

We will be at Solomons this weekend for the Pax River Run. We spend a bit of time at Colonial Beach. Our friend, Jamie, keeps his flybridge boat there. I think it is a Trojan named Reel Antsy.

See you this summer.

I was looking at a Fountain 42, and on the way, my wife saw this Fountain 32 sportfish cruiser. It has really worked for us. It looks good, it is seaworthy, its faster than any Searay by far, its handles great, and its very practical. We went to Havasu and slept on the boat in a cove for 3 nights -- wonderful. So its a fun boat to drive, but its a fun boat to spend weekends aboard. We can take a bunch of friends out, cook on board... Let's just say doors have been opened...

ENFORCER24 05-18-2007 11:04 AM

i know Jamie , i sat and drank way too much on the peir behind his boat with a few mutual friends at Dockside last year , small world aint it

for what we do a bigger boat is a great idea. we both want something bigger because we stay on the boat almost every weekend. a 25 baja is a bit small for that. oso is what got her to love go fasts. the friends that i made on here she loves and loves what comes with being friends with these people. like i said i got it made. i just need the money....

I had cruisers for 10 years before buying a go-fast. I liked them but the distance we normally travel now made them in-efficient.
If your favorite spot is 20 miles away and it's a 30 minute ride in your go-fast, it'll be a little over an hour in a cruiser. Considering a 454 running 3,300 rpms burns the same amount of fuel no matter what the boats speed is you'll burn more than TWICE the fuel to get to the same locations. (I know this from experience!!!). Obviously the cabin arrangements are nice but we'd seen everything we wanted in our reduced cruising range and expanded our destinations big time by moving to a go-fast.
Our cruisers (8 total) ranged from a trailered 26 ft up to a slip kept 35 Searay. Having the ability to load up and haul to another body of water was something else we hadn't been able to do for many years.
I will admit, the wife didn't want a go-fast so we didn't have one the last 2 years we owned the cruiser. Once she came around we switched and she LOVES it. Now I couldn't get her to sell this type of boat for another. If it weren't for her changing her mind I'd either still be trying to convince her or would have bought a small speed boat of some sort to satisfy me.
Good Luck and ignore the "macho" types, spending weekends on the water in the type of boat you like but without the wife defeats the purpose of marrying her in the first place.

BTW: We overnighted on our 31 and now the 38 quite a bit.

ENFORCER24 05-18-2007 02:01 PM

sorry.

Mark 05-18-2007 05:08 PM

I am often torn between the two. I would like to thank the speed junkies at OSO for getting me back on track!!! :drink:

carcrash 05-18-2007 07:27 PM

I think its important to figure out what you like to do on the boat, and then get one that fits your life style. Always better to make yourself happy than to just impress others.

Sleep on it? Cook on it? Use the head? BBQ? Swim? 6 people for cocktails? Out in the cold? Only when its hot? Night? or only during the day? Weekends aboard? Two week vacations aboard?

Consider those things, and the answer will be obvious.

Don't get greedy now.

BOBCATMATHEWS 05-19-2007 09:58 AM

there are some really nice used 27-28 ft cuddys out there, that could satisfy your need for speed ,and still have a decent cabin, lose the porti-potty for a pump out head.

allfiredup 05-19-2007 10:09 AM

I would look into some older go-fasts. Alot of them have pump-out heads & even a small frig like the mid to late 90's Scarabs. My 43 had a stand-up head a frig & a hang-up locker. It was missing a genny & a/c. Mine has trip. 825's so it was plenty fast but I know there are alot of 38 Scarabs out there with the same equip. for far below the 100k mark. This is my 2 cents. I kinda went the other way.:D

yesrej 05-19-2007 10:50 AM

it depends on what kind of speeds you are looking for. i went to a boat show last winter and saw a 25 crownline. i was so impressed with this boat. with a 496 ho it would hit 60 and it had a fridge, micro, enclosed head and a/c. boat show price was 75k on a trailer. if i would be a happy with 60 i would be on that boat now but i wouldnt be happy at 80.
