Bought my first offshore boat...help!

I Just purchased a 38 cig from Florida.

I live in Australia and OC. I am flying over to pick it up and ship it to Los Angeles end of next week.

What is involved in transferring the boat to my name? What papers should the guy selling it have on him?

As i am going to store the boat in OC california, do I need to re register it? When I sign the boat into my name do i need to pay anything....HELP?!!!!!!

P.s. I can't wait to drive it!.

are you buying from a boat dealer or is it a person off the street??

priceb 05-28-2007 10:37 AM

I bought the 89 cig for sale on the classified in florida. It is a private sale

Cool boat....Congrats!!

You need a bill of sale, a title on the boat and trailer signed over from the old owner to you. If the boat is coast guard documented, you need a coast guard bill of sale and an abstract.

I believe in California, you will pay less or no sales tax if the boat is sold by a private individual. Could be wrong about that though.

Cool boat, I was interested in that boat 5 or 6 years ago. It's got some interesting history, when new it was used as some sort of pace boat in the Americas's Cup sailing races. I also hears it was involved in smuggling Cubans  There was a ton of $$ spent on it within the last few years. A lot of boat for short money.

Thats what I was thinking. It is a very good price.

White Knuckles 05-28-2007 08:58 PM

Congrats Price. Did you by chance have the boat surveyed?

Thats the best price I've seen on a clean Gun rigged like that one.

TeamSaris 05-29-2007 06:15 AM

To me, I think its a very reasonable price. Top Guns hold their value awesome but when you think about it, it has 650HP on Bravo Drives, plus its an 18 year old boat.

yes you are wrong. plus you have to pay property tax every year also.

az has no sales tax on a private party sale

getchasum111 05-29-2007 05:23 PM

wow...very nice boat for the money

priceb 05-29-2007 06:35 PM

Man, I am worried now. Got a couple of warnings....

I'm going to sound stupid, but i didnt' get a survey done.

Can anyone give me advice????? I have put a 20k deposit down on it...and the warnings are worrying me.

I believe he needs an urgent sale.

Need advise asap.

Biggus 05-29-2007 07:40 PM

I think you're fine, I know that there was a lot of money and time put into that boat not that long ago. Call Phil @ Lip Ship, I believe he's owned it in the past and is familiar with its history.

Don't know how your contract reads regarding the deposit. Seems to me you could still get a survey done. If you don't want the boat maybe Clay will buy it! :evilb:

priceb 05-29-2007 08:04 PM

Hey! Hang on guys, I really want it which is why I jumped into it!.

Does anyone have Phil Lipships phone number?

I think I am ok, just got concerned.

As long as all is fine, it will be the baddest boat in Melbourne!.

Just new to this so nervous....

All New 1989 Cigarette Top Gun. Brand New 650HP BigM Dart motors. Merlin heads/Intakes. Nothing spared. New Gen. Marine Air. MB Quart Stereo w/1000w Kenwood Amp. Intercom System. New Bravo HP Drives. 79MPH

I paid $65K for my 1990 Bullet with twin HP500's and a stereo that I replaced.

I'm sorry but the price seems too low to me. If it is legit, congrats on a great buy! :)

Just my two-cents...

If it was me I would hire a documentation company to be my closing agent. For about $350.00 they will insure a clean title and handle all necessary paperwork to make sure your deal is perfectly legal no matter where you register it.

Your insurance company may require a survey from a NAMS or SAMS surveyor, but you should have it surveyed anyway to make sure you're buying what you are paying for.

Good Luck.
