My son in-law installed a remote start on his Toyota Celica. His is the type that if the engine doesn't fire right away the system tries again, and again.
Can you guess what happened???
One day his mom went out and decided to use his car and remote start. Car was in the driveway, mom standing out side, car left in gear, mom hits the start button and off it goes. The car lurches forward towards the garage door. Stops moving when starter stops. System tries start it again. This time it crashes through the garage door and into his dads classic Volkswagon. Car stops, then tries to start again shoving the VW into the other end of the garage. Car stops but doesn't attempt starting again. Mom calls her son screaming that his car is possessed. Remote start was removed and tossed.

Good stories with the remote starters - lolol!

And to get you back on track from your orignal point :D Wire the initial hot to a keyed switch, then coming off the key switch you have an "on" and a "start" (in a tradtional set up), well the "on" maintains power to your ignition system / motor and the "start" is momentary just to turn over the motor. So you want to have the "on" lead be switched (in the new configuration) and run another (constant) hot lead through your "start button", so when it comes time to start the engine, turn on the key - flip the "ignition" switch to "on" and hit the button. To kill the motor you just turn off the ignition switch / lead and your motor will shut down, much like if you turned off your key in the way you do now with just the key switch. Wire hour meters and whatever else down stream of the "ignition switch" (not the key switch and you should be in good shape. Hope this makes sense - easiest way to visualize it is to draw it out, preferably on a cocktail napkin as we all know that is where the best ideas begin to take shape!!:drink:

Good luck.
