Spectre Vs Motion

Hello All-

So this weekend I am going to look at a couple 30' Spectre's and one 30' Motion. From the reseach I have done on OSO and other sites it seems like they are very similar.

Comparing Apples to Apples what one would you rather have?
All between 2000 and 2002. All have 300's. All have about that same equipment on them. What one would you rather drive?

thanks for all the help!
Don

Spectre.......

lowblue320 07-06-2007 09:37 AM

never been in a 30 Motion but have a friend thats had many (twins/tripples) and hes been on my boat and what he sais is that you cant compare, the spectre rides much better specialy in the ruff......also docked next to one before....the Spectre looks much better and bigger in the water... I would have to see what condition the hulls are in and hours on motors and PRICE thats gonna help you out ......

LOL! The spectre's have the better paint. One of the motions is all white, the other is purple and yellow.

as a matter fact Ryan would know he raced mine with Wylie when it raced.

The Spectre is a better pleasure boat....more amenties, better lay out, better construction.

I have owned both and have been in several of each. Every Spectre I have been in Porpoised like crazy. From the time you plane off to 100. Sometimes you can't get them to stop porposing. If you have a good chop it's better. You have no choice but to have a giant tunnel tab. The spectre also tend to sneeze over the bow quite a bit and spray in your face espically at slower speeds. I kept mine about 3 months and absolutly hated it. The Motion on the other hand, never porposied. I think the ride was more solid. It didn't have the "hollow sound" when landing off of a big wave. The spectre always sounted like it was going to fall apart. I would hands down recommend the Motion.

Wow!!! Not my experience at all! Sure it bounces between 50 and 70, but how big a deal is that. I just stay out of that range. It never gets out of control -- just speed up of slow down and it stops. I have no tab and no desire to have one. As far as a hollow sound -- it is hollow. How does that matter?

No offense, Every boat has a different attitude. Some are better then others. If yours doesn't have a tab and you can control the porpoising yours is set up better then mine was. There can be a lot of variables. Engine HP and weight, Engine height, props, set back etc. Most 30' Spectre need a tab. The bounce yours does at 50 to 70 didn't stop on mine. The faster you go the worse it got. I would have to slow back down to about 30 and slowly accelerate, only then could I get it to stop. In perfectly flat water I could never drive the boat over 100, it would start purpoising.
As for the hollow sound I mentioned: My boat sounded like it was going to fall apart when you hit a big wave. The whole thing rattled and sounded like the bottom was going to exploded.
When it came to the motion it ran straight as can be, never had a porpoise or even bounce like you said at 50 to 70. It also sounded very solid. It didn't have the same feel like it was going to come apart.
Again, this is my experience with my boats. I can't speak for yours and honestly did not mean any offense at all. I was very frustrated with the Spectre. I tried a bunch of things to straighten it out and nothing worked. I even bought a custom, oversized tab from Berry Cuda that they used on the race boat. When you lowered it, it would stop the porpoising, it just felt like I was dragging my mother in law.

Wow again.

You are the least satisfied Spectre owner I have seen. Sory to hear about your luck. Wait... That explains alot. This is coming from the unluckiest dudes ever to walk the earth.:D

No offense taken. Just says alot for the variance in quality from boat to boat.

berns29scarab 07-07-2007 09:36 AM

i owned a 98 30 spectre with 2003 300x's spinning 15x32 3 blades. boat was simply amazing. i put in XS of 150 hrs on this package. where i boat is usually 1-2 ft slop with the occasional 3's in the mix !! when i first got the boat i had the same issue with the slight porpoise. its common on smaller outboard cats. as a matter of fact i personally know of 2 32 skaters that if not trimmed properely DO THE SAME THING !! as you accelerate and the boats on plane, slightly trim her up until the porpose stops. if that doesnt work you may have to play with CG (center of gravity) and or engine height. I WOULD AND WILL BUY ANOTHER 30 SPECTRE without a doubt

lowblue320 07-07-2007 09:43 AM

a little porpous on mine from about 60-70...just let go of the wheel and accelarate it so that it goes to were ever it wants once the tunnel gets air it will turn the boat slightly then grab the wheel and no more porpous........Im extremely happy with the boat.......and loves the chop...........

Maritime_Eng 07-07-2007 04:25 PM

Well the search is over! I bought the 2002 Motion. That boat is super clean! I pick it up next weekend!!!!!

You maybe right. Maybe you can give me some lessons, as long as you promise not to go to fast!!
Infact, maybe we can trade! You teach me how to drive a cat, I can teach you punctuation!
