Need input on the possible scam for the...

sale of my boat. I keep getting emails from this guy....and I tell him to call me. Which he has not as of yet. His name is Ronald Stobries and writes he is a Canadian citizen and his birth date..(sort of fishy). Just want to know if any of you in the forum have run across this name or person? I can post the email, but I really don't like long reading threads.

Thanks
JB

Lemme guess.......... he wants to buy it sight unseen, and send you a check, and have you 'refund' some of this money, since he is buying this boat for someone else, and they have already given him a check????????:evilb: :evilb:

NO...this one has a different twist...like Cubby Checker
OK..here is the email....

This what came from "boatraderonline":

> SENDER'S NAME: Ronald Stobries
> TELEPHONE: Buyer did not Provide

My Reply:
Ron,
Just wanted to get back to you to let you know that the ad is legit. And before I send any final price anywhere, I would rather talk to you in person.
The price is negotiable. The phone number is in the ad (412-825-3840). Did you go to my website I have made for more information on the boat? I am a private seller. And there are sources for financing.

Thanks
J B

And the his come back today:
Hi,
Thank you very much for your reply, right now I am in London on a
business trip and will be back two days before my son's wedding, I am very much interested in buying this Boat,
I want to use this boat as a surprise gift to my son who is getting married soon in Canada, but will require as a matter of urgency some additional information about the state of the interior/ exterior, actual hours on it, number of previous owner (if any). I also I want to know if it has been involved in any sort of accident and whether there is any lien on the title, did you recently have the boat surveyed and please let me know why you want to sell this boat.If your descriptions suites me, we shall make arrangement on how to wire the funds to you and other vital issues.
I am a very simple man and I demand you tell me the truth about this boatbecause as it is now, I do not think I will have that time to come to the states forinspection now, If you can assure me trust, we will do business. I lost money last
time I had a deal with an American, So I demand honesty (please I am not saying that you are not honest) However what ever you told me concerning the condition
of the boat will be examined by my agent on the day of pick up.
Furthermore, I wish to let you know little about me, my name is Ronald Stobries, a Canadian citizen, I was born on 07-13-1945.
After answering the question I asked you concerning this Boat, I want you also to tell me little about your self like I just did because its necessary since we may have a deal of this magnitude and also include your home address.
I wait to hear from you!
Ronald
PS: LET ME KNOW YOUR FINAL PRICE AT ONCE

WOW...it sure is getting deep....real deep

Brad Zastrow 07-09-2007 03:43 PM

Most people born in 1945 are not big email fans and normally like the phone. Who buys sight unseen or without a survey? I will give credit he is asking intelligent questions that most scammers will not ask. I find it very hard to believe any one person is too busy or so rich they can not take the time to call you. If he is that rich he can buy a new one with a dealer locally. My gut tells me this is a scam. The red flags to me is the lack of a phone call, wire of the money and the trust issue. The more someone says trust me the more I run away. Do not let the boat leave your sight untill you have confirmed with your banker the money is in your account.

Keown Ralph Scam Artist

I got rid of a scam artist a few days ago as well. His initial e-mail was nearly identical to the one you just posted, but he used the name Keown Ralph . He sent several e-mails about the final price for the boat and kept asking what my bottom number was. Once I told him, he sent me this e-mail.

Hello,

Thanks for your Sincere Corporation and understanding to this transaction. I am satisfied with the purchase and willing to make out Payment right away to you. Payment would be mailed to you via a USPS MAIL. I want you to understand that you will be receiving a check of $190,000, the excess is for my shipper that will be coming for pick up, the funds will be used for the shipping of the (1989 Apache 45} along side other goods i placed order for in care of my shipper once you receive the check get it cashed and deduct your money ($185,000) and an extra $100 for the stress of catching and running around and then proceed to a western union outlet and have my shipping Charges Paid to My delivery company. I hope i can trust you with my shipping company charges.

Please acknowledge this email I have sent you and await my Payment. I request you provide me with your details, for Payment to be Issued and mailed out to you

Name in full: , Address: ,
City: , State: , Zip code: Phone#:

Thanks as I await your Payment Details.

Keown Ralph
1140 apt-e Cary ave.,
Durham,NC,27704.

Ok, yea. I'll do just that because I am as stupid as they come and can't see this coming! I had a pretty good idea that the guy was full of sh*t from the very first e-mail, but I wanted to play along to see what his scam was. After playing with him for a few days and finally receiving the e-mail above, I sent him the following e-mail in response:

Keown -

I need to know if this an accurate address to use on the bill of sale.

Keown Ralph
1140 apt-e Cary Ave. Apt E
Durham, NC 27704

I will need a current phone number for you as well so that my attorney can contact you directly to arrange the sale. The attorney will be handling the bill of sale and all other necessary paper work. The attorney will also act as a broker and title clerk for the deal. Your payment and the boat/title will be held in escrow by the attorney. When your payment check clears, the attorney will release the payment to me and will release the boat to you. After this has occurred, it will be your responsibility to arrange and pay for the shipping.

Again, please let me know if the address you gave in your e-mail is an accurate mailing address and please forward your telephone number so that my attorney can reach you and get the process started.

Thank You

It was fun dancing round and round with this guy, but all good things must come to an end. This last e-mail that I sent put an end to it as the guy has completely disappeared and has not returned any e-mails since then. :D :D

BK 07-09-2007 04:44 PM

Notice the word "Boat" in his reply. It's spelled with a capital B in every instance. That's because he copy and pasted that word into a form letter he probably sends to "Car" "Motorcycle" and "Airplane" ads too.

Glad you decided not to deal with him.

Good luck!
Val

sounds like saddam:evilb:

Prostreeter 07-09-2007 06:17 PM

Tell him your bottom line price and money talks and ****walks and see what happens.

It's a scam.no doubt about it.I was selling a 1969 Shelby GT500 two years ago and got the same emails.

TexomaPowerboater 07-09-2007 08:00 PM

I don't know about that one. I say quite fn around and just give him you bottom price. Answer his questions, tell him about yourself, yada yada yada. What do you have to lose. Jump through his hoops or not. He may not talk very good english and probobly feels very uncomfortable trying to call. Maybe tell him that you are big on trust as well and you don't trust anybody who prefers to communicate via email from a different country.

I was always under the impression that funds cannot be wired unless the money is there and they can not be taken out except for by the recipient.

Dead on!! If he can't scam you on the boat, he's going to try to get at your money another way. Tell him to pi$$ off!

mcraymond3 07-09-2007 08:43 PM

SCAM SCAM SCAM. They told me the same story. As it goes, they may want you to transfer funds to their account first for "transfer fees" or some BS like that.

tim mccray 07-09-2007 08:45 PM

Doesn't pass the smell test

If you have to keep asking yourself whether or not it's a scam, that should tell you something. The cracks he made about Americans would have been enough to make me tell him to go f%*k him self!!!

dockrocker 07-09-2007 08:50 PM

If the guy can't speak (type) English, then WTF? My head hurts just from reading that crap.... especially as the guy is supposedly English (or at least Canadian). For comparison, here is (admittedly, the greatest) complaint letter ever written, and it was penned by a Brit. They call it "English" for a reason...

Dear Cretins,

I have been an NTL customer since 9th July 2001, when I signed up for your 3-in-one deal for cable TV, cable modem, and telephone. During this three-month period I have encountered inadequacy of service which I had not previously considered possible, as well as ignorance and stupidity of monolithic proportions. Please allow me to provide specific details,so that you can either pursue your professional perogative, and seek to rectify these difficulties - or more likely (I suspect) so that you can have some entertaining reading material as you while away the working day smoking B&H and drinking vendor-coffee on the bog in your office:

My initial installation was cancelled without warning, resulting in my spending an entire Saturday sitting on my fat arse waiting for your
technician to arrive. When he did not arrive, I spent a further 57 minutes listening to your infuriating hold music, and the even more
annoying Scottish robot woman telling me to look at your helpful website....HOW? I alleviated the boredom by playing with my testicles for a few minutes - an activity at which you are no-doubt both familiar and highly adept.

The rescheduled installation then took place some two weeks later, although the technician did forget to bring a number of vital tools -
such as a drill-bit, and his cerebrum. Two weeks later, my cable modem had still not arrived. After 15 telephone calls over 4 weeks my modem arrived... six weeks after I had requested it, and begun to pay for it.

I estimate your internet server's downtime is roughly 35%... hours between about 6pm -midnight, Mon-Fri, and most of the weekend.

I am still waiting for my telephone connection. I have made 9 calls on my mobile to your no-help line, and have been unhelpfully transferred to a variety of disinterested individuals, who are it seems also highly skilled bollock jugglers.

I have been informed that a telephone line is available (and someone will call me back); that no telephone line is available (and someone will call me back); that I will be transferred to someone who knows whether or not a telephone line is available (and then been cut off); that I will be transferred to someone (and then been redirected to an answer machine informing me that your office is closed); that I will be transferred to someone and then been redirected to the irritating Scottish robot woman...and several other variations on this theme.

Doubtless you are no longer reading this letter, as you have at least a thousand other dissatisfied customers to ignore, and also another one of those crucially important testicle-moments to attend to. Frankly I don't care, it's far more satisfying as a customer to voice my frustrations in print than to shout them at your unending hold music. Forgive me, therefore, if I continue.

I thought BT were ****, that they had attained the holy piss-pot of godawful customer relations, that no-one, anywhere, ever, could be more disinterested, less helpful or more obstructive to delivering service to their customers. That's why I chose NTL, and because, well, there isn't anyone else is there?

How surprised I therefore was, when I discovered to my considerable dissatisfaction and disappointment what a useless shower of bastards you truly are. You are sputum-filled pieces of distended rectum, incompetents of the highest order. British Telecom - wankers though they are - shine like brilliant beacons of success, in the filthy puss-filled mire of your seemingly limitless inadequacy. Suffice to say that I have now given up on my futile and foolhardy quest to receive any kind of service from you. I suggest that you cease any potential future attempts to extort payment from me for the services which you have so pointedly and catastrophically failed to
deliver - any such activity will be greeted initially with hilarity and disbelief quickly be replaced by derision, and even perhaps bemused
rage. I enclose two small deposits, selected with great care from my cat's litter tray, as an expression of my utter and complete contempt for both you and your pointless company. I sincerely hope that they have not become desiccated during transit - they were satisfyingly moist at the time of posting, and I would feel considerable disappointment if you did not experience both their rich aroma and delicate texture. Consider them the very embodiment of my feelings towards NTL, and its worthless employees.

Have a nice day - may it be the last in you miserable short life, you irritatingly incompetent and infuriatingly unhelpful bunch of twats.

John
Now *that* is English! :D
