what would the benefit or downside be to mounting tabs like in the pic below vs mounting them at an angle like the transom?

You will get a variety of answers on this one. Here's mine.Conventional mount at same as deadrise works well. Velocity's from '80's always mounted at 1/2 deadrise @ 11 dergrees it works good too. If the boat rides high on the pad. Drag boat guys mount them flat like the picture. If you run in heavy water they tend to smack flat and give a stiffer ride. These I think are too close together and may interfere with water as it passes by the prop. Fountains most recently started mounting them flat but still at full width on boats that run 100 mph or more. Since then it has become trendy to mount them flat. The water only hits the outside corner of the tab and will break the cylinder on occasions. If it is to help chine walking they are not training wheels learn to drive it.

The force from the tabs will act perpendicular to the plane of the tab. The force you're interested in from the tab is a vertical one, either to level the boat side to side (vertical force will roll the boat about it's centerline) or to lift the stern (vertical force needed to do that). if you mount the tabs at an angle, only a portion of the force from the tabs is in the direction that you want (vertical), the rest is going sideways and creating drag you don't need.

Seems you get more response from the tabs if they are mounted even with the hull, not horizontal. Water coming from under the boat is coming out in the same degree as the deadrise. Horizontal tabs will have the outside corners deeper in the water than a flush mounted tab when trimming down. Unless we are talking flat bottom fishing boats. :)

Are those mounted that far in from Formula, or an owner/operator installed setup? Looks outta wack
