tough call........... I think Sterling is spinning their 1050, 557's up to 6300 rpms for peak power....what's max rpm for the merc?

Lots of protection built into the mercs though....

Masher, depends on how you value your resellability, with the Merc 1075's it will be much easier to sell. If I was going to keep it a while and was not concerned about resell, Tommy's 1200's would be hard to beat, JC , Gellner and Eddie, are very gifted builders and very honest, they will stay with you if you have any problems.

pm203 07-30-2007 09:27 PM

Merc 1075's. Best resale, reliable and turn key.

blume 07-30-2007 10:06 PM

Now days, nearly, almost, virtually everyone is making a twin Whipple Fuel Injected engine that is capable of producing an honest 1,000 -1,200 hp @ 6,000 rpms, while being able to idling like an import car and not dieing when put into gear.

Sterling and Merc were the two in question here.

Both will stand behind their engines for the given time they decide to warranty their products.

The decision needs to be made upon which will be the most reliable after their warranty expires.

We know Sterling is not cheap, but in no way either is Merc. Everyone sees black only when speaking of boats but there is a just as reliable choice in Sterling.

Regardless of choice, there are only two engines that you can sell a boat that houses them within. Sterling and Merc.

FROGMAN524 07-30-2007 10:22 PM

who makes Tommy's 1220's?

They are refferring to "CHIEF ENGINES" Tommy is the owner/builder. He makes a twin turbo that is bad to the bone!!

Ron P 07-30-2007 11:00 PM

Has anyone tried Tommy's MDS box and rev limiters?

Does anyone have his complete graphics system yet?

masher44 07-30-2007 11:20 PM

If I repower or can get it without power JC will build me more.

articfriends 07-31-2007 12:16 AM

With $25k rebuilt for each mill every 50 hours however...

So essentially... $1,000 an hour for rebuilds if you have a twin.

Tom A. 07-31-2007 06:17 AM

Ron Potter (formerly NorTech's engine builder)
I have seen his engines hold up better than any.

WildWarrior 07-31-2007 07:34 AM

If the choice were between the two it would be the injected 1075s. All big solid roller engines require top end work with in 70 or so hrs and if carburated with two circuit 1050 dominators they run so fat that they wash down your cylinders in the same time frame.

I wouldnt want to maintain either engines as with the avalible high reving haudralic lifters with no float even at 6500 rpms you dont need to run solid lifters to make big power on a marine application.

There are guy's out there like Rudy @ Diamond Marine that builds our true 1200hp mills and more than likely Tommy at Cheif now building big power that will run 150hrs+ with out tearing them down.

Injected or 3 circuit carbureted with hydraulic sticks.

Good luck!
