Default Gps

OK, I know this topic has been discussed many times. I tried the search, and it came up with too much about what everyone is running on GPS.
I could take the time to weed through it, but, lets face it, I'm lazy on the weekend.
I want to get a GPS - budget 2-3 bills, less if it'll get the job done.
I want to be able to:
See Charts
Monitor speed and Distance
Record paths

What are the recommendations of hand-held vs. mounted??
I'm looking for something simple and cheap - but good. I can read a chart, but want to take the easy way.
I just want something that gets the job done.
