The 40 was a strech on dons 38.
Ted Theodolli's 1st was the 53, then shortened to the 45, then the 63, still being built today.
This is pulled right from the Mag site.

"A Magnum is equal parts style and power. Designed by the famous Italian designer, Pininfarina, this beautiful, aerodynamic hull is built of epoxy-bonded Kevlar making it remarkably strong and light-weight.

Powered by 1800 HP MTU/Detroit or CRM engines , this production yacht can cruise at 60 MPH. Two Magnum 63’ yachts were the overall winners of the longest and most grueling offshore race in the world: the 362 mile Miami-Nassau-Miami. Indeed, none of the other boats made it home.

This Magnum has everything: speed, seaworthiness, large accommodations and style."

When I was at Magnum, I did the Med for a few summers. I had a V16 53' Kevlar, fire engine red in Monaco for the summer. Never short of ,er, kittens.

MM, of course 70+ is go fast.
There are plenty going 60.
It's not how fast you go... its how you go fast.
1st season w/ my 24pantera only hit 65. But could do it in pretty much any water, not just glass.

You sound as if you have not operated a boat of any type or size before.

Before you embark on a trip of this magnatude, you need hands-on boating / yachting / yachtsmen classes. Do not attempt this trip without doing so first or it will most likely go poorly / badly for you and your passengers.

fountaincs, no that was a sunseeker.btw i was aboard a 44 sunseeker this past weekend in seattle - neat boat. 2 of my all time favorite boats are the 53 and 63 magnums - what friggin tanks. i particularly liked a model that they came out with in the 80's called the salt shaker 53'; a center console- amazing. loved the sound of those big (at the time) twin v16 detroits spooling up ( not sure if they ever fitted a ss53 with the 16's though. - jeff
