depends what you are looking to do. I work for Qualcomm the industry leader in long haul truck communications, tracking and fleet management.

We have stand alone (un-tethered) units that can go on your trailer and we have in cab solutions so you can communicate and track your trucks.

let me know what you are really trying to gain and i might be able to help

A student and friend from my high school started GPS Protected back in 1999 and is doing well with their tracking units. Might want to check them out as well.

I've got about 20 trucks I would love to track. We haven't found anything that updates location fast enough. If anyone has something I'd definatly be interested.

CHAOS REIGNS 08-16-2007 12:30 PM

how often do you want location updates?

LubeJobs42 08-16-2007 12:50 PM

I use Teletrack. I looked at a lot of them and they have been around and offer excellant support.

I offer many solutions but would suggest BSM Wireless......although i am up in Canada I do have partners in the U.S. that can facilitate and support. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions;

[email protected]

I have deployed handset and imbedded solutions from one unit to over three hundred so do have experience with the applications.

60 seconds or less.

CHAOS REIGNS 08-16-2007 02:05 PM

we get position updates by the second -- we communicate those to the home office normally every 15 minutes.

Nextel (Dont Mess with the Blue Dots...)

Putting them on the trucks is costly !

We use our Sprint phones to track location as well as to start and finish our employees day.

Their location shows up on our controlers computer, so when they get to the job site they push a button and their day starts. Driving time is pre determined and added per location.
When they leave site their day is over,it will alert and track any deviation in travel.
Works great for us, we track 15 trucks and many workers that way.It also saves several hrs a week preparing our feild guy's pay roll .
The men hate it, but It helps keep them honest!

I'm in the trucking business..big time (1200 tractors.2800 trailers). Main concern is longevity and service nationwide. While there are multiple "start ups" and low price "alternatives", they come and go like the wind leaving you with worthless obsolete junk and no connectivity system.

Bottom line, use the industry leader, Qualcomm, or a handheld Nextel GPS solution. The rest are mostly here today, gone tommorrow.

Nextel did not work for us. My trucks are route trucks and we need almost a live feed to the trucks for tracking. Nextel has a refresh on location something like every 5 minutes and my guys could go through five stops in that time.
