You are correct. Wisconsin has the most restrictive noise laws, Michigan is proposing similar and working with Michigan State University to legalize a "Noise Gun" to monitor boats. All of my boats have muffling with Captains Call to try and keep the natives restful. Still doesn't always work. The WOT passby concerns me the most. It will take our best lawyers to beat it if passed.

I would think the best way to combat this is to be very direct and personal with them.....and beat them at their own game. Every liberal peice of scum has "hypocracy" written on their forehead. There should be ample material to beat this. It is hard to reason with people that have their minds made up from the get go. Kinda like the people that dont like a certain food even though theyve never tasted it.

Yes....
Magicfloat has been talking about this for nearly a year. Don't know the exact story but developers and now the Alabama power company have gotten state laws passed on a number of Alabama lakes restricting boats to under 30 ft and under 50mph.

IT IS ALREADY HAPPENING ELSEWHERE. If you want the first court challenge to one of these laws to be passed in your favor please look up Robert (Magicfloat) and donate to his legal fund.

Chest-beating and aggression will be counterproductive. Active efforts to meet or pass under existing noise ordinances will get you much farther. Don't act like the people that your critics say you are. If you're running straight pipes, get some mufflers and join the 21st century - this is a reality. If you have Captain's Call, use it every time you're off plane. You're outnumbered there, and your best strategy is to remove their cause for complaint.

Very, very tough issure to wade through. I'd love to vent here and elsewhere but i'd likely just magnify the problem. When we're dealing with that blind, senseless and intolerant rage we just gotta know that we probably won't change anyone's heart or mind by responding in kind. Whenever we come up against fear overlaid with righteousness ("I detest anything other than my own agednda + I'm saving the environment") our best and only course is the truth. The ire of these folks is probably lit from several sources:1. noise, 2. fuel consumption, 3.in your face aesthetics (graphics)/boat names, 4.speed, 5.bad boy image, 6.coolness factor, 7.envy, 8.typical personality profile,9. price( conspicious consumption), etc. If we all get clear ( especially us Lake Washington users) what we're doing and how, then we'll likely arrive at some honest conclusions; and these are the things that should be brought to the attention of the King County commissioners.1.) noise: yep, even my motors can be loud and I may have to do something about this particularly around shore. 2.) fact is it depends; I probably burn less fuel annually than if I were going on extened road trips or vacations - some of this is because of how I use my boat - I'm rarely if ever at WOT for any considerable time. 3.) wacky, crazy insane grahics/names = wacky, crazy and insance operators in some folks minds; its really a matter of personal taste and their ability to live and let live, but clearly we've got at least a small part in the image we project. 4.) if we're driving at a prudent and controllable speed given the conditions then we're technically legal and others may only object on the definition of "prudent". 5.) Come on, if we're gonna take on the "bad boy/rebel" personna we gotta take at least some of the heat that comes with the territory - we can't have it both ways all the time. 6.) no apologies here, some folks are just plain jealous or intolerant of neat stuff - tough - grow up and we, myself included have to be a bit more thick skinned to these people. 7.) envy - that's a character defect they have to work on, I know that I do every time so and so gets a new 47' Outerlimits and I'm stuck with my old 38' Scarab ( poor me). 8.) yikes, I can really only speak for myself here. If I've been blessed to be able to have the kind of fun that comes with offshore boating, I ought to be suffused with gratitude. For me this means answering a bunch of questions(even silly ones) from curious onlookers, handling and using my boat with patience and consideration and also remembering that what I like is certainly not everyone's cup of tea. To wit, when I'm being an overbearing, egotistical jerk, that's how people see me; the opposite is also true. 9.) really kind of a philosophical concern; should we all simplify and consume less? I think so; and the people that make those ideas attractive are certainly not those shrilly screaming at me to change what I do. Its the happy well-adjusted folks who suggest alternative ways of enjoying life that catch my attention. I may install a mast and hoist a sail on my boat one day but not because someone wants to ban "Cigarette boats". - Jeff
