PB 28 Velocity 80mph

WOW PB tested the new Velocity 28' w/500efi, they got 80mph out of that boat, damn. That must have been great conditions or Velocity is doing something right!!!! Although a 28' boat that weights 4500lbs that seems pretty light???

What do you all think?

That is real impressive ! Although I would
rather have a heavier boat and just add more power.

BODYSHOT1 01-25-2002 12:31 PM

I've heard the new F1 is very fast..slimmed-down the design..looks great!

Bayley 01-25-2002 12:50 PM

Hey Chuck,
How much does your Scarab weigh?

Dean Ferry 01-25-2002 01:27 PM

That does seem a little light, it will be interesting to see how it runs in F1 this year! :D I have always like the lines of Velocities, especially the 390. Now, if I can win the damn lotto.....

26scarab 01-25-2002 01:37 PM

Bayley,
Wet it goes about #5600 maybe a little more.

floatingphil 01-25-2002 01:41 PM

Is the 280 not the 26' Velocity with a swim platform bolted on?

BJM 01-25-2002 01:42 PM

HOW THEY RUN THIS YEAR WILL DEPEND ON HOW ROUGH THE RACES ARE. THAT BOAT WILL NOT WIN ANY BIG WATER RACES, BUT SHOULD WIN EVERY CALM WATER RACE. IT IS A VERY FAST BOAT! I'M PRAYING FOR BIG WATER.

GRH 01-25-2002 02:08 PM

Great looking boat.... ;)

Bob Teague tested the boat in 3-5 footers and ran 81mph. The test area is usually flatter for high speed conditions, but on this day it was nasty. The prop was way too large for those conditions, but will turn it in normal conditions all day long. The new VR1 pleasure version runs an honest 85mph on GPS.
The VR1 model is lighter because it utilizes 100% composite material(NO WOOD)from top to bottom. All of the single engine boats, down to the 220 model, now include 100% coring in the sides. This ensures a rock solid lay up for the true offshore enthusiast.
The VR1 is new from top to bottom. These changes have made the VR1 hungry for big water while still showing the fastest top speed of all. 80 mph isn't shabby for 3-5's. 85 mph is even better in 1-2's.
Velocity will have VR1's at most of the major boat shows for you to look at. If you can't wait, call me at the factory and I will send you some info.

PS. Thanks for your comments MIke. Well appreciated!!

Mike,

Hall's propeller is by far the best shop for serious high performance prop work. Everyone is starting to use them on the racing circuit. He will lazer check the blades, clean it up, throw in a few secrets and wham you got a minimum of 2-3 MPH. Give him a call and tell him your a friend of mine for a discount 407-568-5506 ask for mike.

As far as the boat coming apart Mr.Cain, If you dont cut me off I wont ram you!!!!!!!!
Right Mike!! LOL LOL LOL

I thank all for the nice comments.

Scott

My 288 Sunsation fully outfitted with an a/c weighs 4,500 lbs...

It seems to be the average weight for a 28 modern footer...

Hey Satch, Wanna upgrade?  :D :D ;)

Saw the VR-1 at the CHI boat show. Very sleek looking, but not a very tall boat at all, which is probably why it's fairly light weight. Reminds me kinda of a 22 Scarab look, low and sleek.

The appearance may lead one to believe it's not a great "rough water" boat as most good rough water boats are taller. We shall see, as time will tell :)

Some might argue the Edmond Fitzgerald was not a good "rough water" boat. DOH!

Saw the VR1 at the chicago show looked good and fast. Looked at the 30 very nice, looking forward to seeing them again in miami. Hmm made I can trade in my 260 ;)

What does everybody think about the way the sides are angled in at the chine? I’m sure it has something to do with providing less wetted surface (i.e. lower hydrodynamic drag coefficient) but wouldn’t it also give it a higher tendency to roll?

I did see the boat run in a race on Speedvision a few weeks ago and it was tearing up some pretty decent sized chop.

as for the weight of the boat - last spring/summer there was a great short article in PB or Hot Boat about Velocity's new design F1 - from what I remember, Steve said that they built the boat as light as they could and kept testing it until it "didn't break" - then they knew that they had the right construction....

Looks like they found it - good luck Scott - great looking boat.

The reversed chine area is major part of the hydro-performance. It plays a different role at different speeds. I would love to tell you in detail, but it's TOP SECRET. Notice how I said role and not ROLL!!!!!! Like I said,
TOP SECRET!!!

Scott- VR1 PILOT :D

Padraig 01-28-2002 10:12 AM

I know, if you tell us about the reverse chine, you will have to kill us! :D

Will Eyerock have a VR 1 at the Niagara Falls show?
