its all in the throttle hand.

It's more than the throttle hand. I'm not talking about pulling the throttle when the boat lifts/prop grabs air.

Yea, I had no problems with my 24'er and a bravo either for almost 500 hrs of punishment in the same water I run now-- but the prop grabbing air almost always coincided with the boat and or the bow lifting up, so you had something to time your "throttle hand" to - plus if the prop did ever slip and grab it was against less weight and less horsepower.

With this 27 and large k-planes I find myself able to run level on top of big stuff in the cheasapeake bay, where the speed is high enough, and the boat is long enough, that the hull is spanning wave to wave without lifting - but the "valley" of the waves are so deep that the prop will slip and grab. No way to pull throttle in time. This is what is killing my drive, and I'm afraid the bravo won't be much better.

Well I'm moving slow but here are some update pics. I got most of the old graphics off and the bilge just about gutted.

Stormrider 09-29-2007 05:59 PM

john, you're a busy guy!
good to see you picking good hulls for your projects. ;)

jdub 09-29-2007 08:29 PM

Whats up Rob... bout time for you to get a project :D That 28 Apache has your name all over it. You know the one...

Donzilla 09-30-2007 07:15 AM

I did a search and can't find the corsa project I did.How is the transom? You will have to go at the floor to do the tank. I will see if I can dig up some pictures this week. Wow I had over 60K in mine But she is still racing as UNDERTOW!

jdub 09-30-2007 08:16 AM

I have to cut the transom to do the Bravo conversion, but it is solid. I really want to replace the tank so the floor is coming up. And a new Pirelli or Lonseal floor will be going down. Donzilla if you get a chance I would like to get some info on trim tab placement. I would love to see some pics of your project. Thanks.

jdub,

I met up with Brian Alfrey recently at the LC poker run who built my hydraulic steering and was telling him that I was wanting to install a stellings box and could he adapt my rams to fit it. He said no problem that he could just custom make some longer rams for the cylinders since they are already mounted on the transom. I can give you his number if you are interested. I have seen tabs mounted both ways on the Corsa some of them are flat and close to the drive and others are towards the outside like you see on a lot of boats. I am going to mount mine towards the outside since my ram mounts would prevent me from placing the tabs flat an towards the middle.

Alex

jdub 09-30-2007 08:45 AM

Thats good to know because I got my steering from Brian also...great product. Did you get the box yet?

muffman 09-30-2007 10:28 PM

No I have been looking for a used stellings box but haven't had any luck yet. If anyone out there has two for sale maybe we could each by one. I suspect there will be some for sale soon being that the season is almost over.

I've heard of coating the inside of the tank with ??? in the auto resto world, and that it really works. Anyone hear of that being done in a boats tank?? Might be worth looking into.............if it's not too late...............

Well I took the floor up and got the tank out. It's a good thing because it has some pitting on the bottom side. So the bad news is I have to get a new tank, but the good news is I am able to see that these boats were built like brick chit houses. Everything is solid under the floor and it has full length stringers.

Another cool thing I found was when I took apart the original back seat and found "Cigarrette" written on the foam. I guess Cigarette and Corsa were using the same upholsters at the time.

These will be going on the new floor...they came out of Ryan Beckley's old boat. I got some Dana Marine billet bases for them.

jdub 12-23-2007 04:23 PM

Thanks Brian. I hope it does the new breed of Corsa justice when it's done

This was my Corsa. I think it could of been the plug for the newer style boats. It had a 1/2" gel coat on it and a wooden splash rail screwed into the side. It took me months to sand all the gel off.

the title said 80. It was my offshore boat and it was a repo from eastern airlines in 1988? I built the motor w/12 to 1 comp.468 w/420 exhaust. Accel hei ignition, It ran 76 mph on its best day. I used single ram steering and what ever I could scavenge for the rest of it. The fuel tank were 25 gal. saddle tanks. I had about 6000 into it and ran the crap out of it. First garage boat paint job. It was called Black Beauty when I got it and was in almost non restorable cond. The motor in the boat was a crate fresh LS6 that had rusty acces. on it. I put my hand on the thermostat housing and it broke off and crumbled. The TRS dated the boat back to like 73 or so. Good luck w/yours

bob 12-23-2007 09:33 PM

J lookin good!

RumRunner 12-28-2007 09:24 AM

The 509 that came out of my old 27 excalibur (pictured above). It pushed that boat 80 so we'll so what happens.

Sorry Bruce couldn't give you everything:D

RumRunner 12-28-2007 04:50 PM

Do you know what kind of power the engine is making?

jdub 12-29-2007 09:01 AM

I never dynoed it, but I would say 550hp is a safe number.

This was the corsa martini hull they used as a plug to make the newer style hull.80's vintage.1st offshore boat 1/2" of gel coat fairing material and a piece of wood to make the spalsh rail. Took about 4 months to sand all the gel off and straighten the hull. ran great with b/b trs set-up.

Couple of the carbon fiber dash and gauges. Plus the back seat I made and had covered...it matches damn close to the seats.

littledcsrodshop 05-03-2008 05:21 PM

Dude the boat looks really good !! great project !!

What did you end up setting the X-dim. at ?

jdub 05-03-2008 05:26 PM

18 1/4", that will put my prop shaft centerline about 3 1/2" below the keel. I can always go down. It's just more expensive to go up:D

littledcsrodshop 05-03-2008 10:10 PM

Yeah I know what you mean spacers come in 1/2" increments & are much cheaper than shorties are , or the alternative of reglassing & moving everything up ect... I am in the process of deciding exactlly were I want to set my X at & I am like you I would rather be a tad high than to low however just right would be nice to hit the first time out...:D I will most likely end up around 17 1/2" but thats not set in stone just yet... Not sure what you have in mind for props but I will be staying away from the 5 blades due to the fact that I will already have the XR stressed a bit harder than I would like.

If you need gauges, let me know. Guys restoring boats have a special price break with us!!
