Car engine compartments are open and vent out fuel vapors. Cars with fuel leaks will start on fire without the explosion. Boat engine compartments a mostly sealed and vapors from a very small leak can have tragic results. If he wants to use car parts on his boat, then feel free to ride with him. Just don't expect any sympathy from me when tragedy strikes.

Marine alternators, distributors, and starters are designed with vent screens to reduce the risk of explosion. If fuel vapors accumulate in an engine compartment and there is a spark, backup and watch fireworks.

Why do you think they have bilge blowers on boats?????

Also, your insurance will deny any claim.

if a cars fuel pump fails it pees on the ground
if a marine fuel pump fails in a boat it is bypassed into carb if if you are using a "car" fuel pump it fills bilge

The carb should be replaced, there are no J tubes on non marine carbs... that really could cause a fire in certain situations. The distributor probably doesn't make a difference.

This definitely sounds like lack of fuel. check the pressure first, then figure out where the problem is. you could be getting air in the line at some point.

I will have two Marine Holley J-tube carbs for sale reasonably in about a month.
