FORD V-10
 
I've been thinking about a newer truck for some time. I've located a 2000 Ford F250 crew cab
4X4 XLT with a V-10 and 3.73LS axle. With that powertrain combo its rated to tow 10300lbs, which should be enough to tow my 1990 Formula 292.

Any opinions on this powertrain? It's a great deal, but I told myself that I would keep my 1994 Ford F250 with the 460ci first!

That's what I pull my 32 Fountain with. The limited slip is great at the launch, never have had to use 4x4 like I've had to do before with other tow vehicles. I have to get my back tires wet cause of the stepped hull, or it hangs up on the trailer bunks.

I like it, but only 13k miles so far. I get 11 mpg avg overall.

Few things with the truck. Sometimes slight squeak in the front end. Random, so I can't fix it, cause it's never doing it when you try to fix it. 4x4 system isn't the best, I like my past Chevy systems better. Rear tires want to "stick" on. Tolerances are too close in my opp, but you just have to grease behind the rim when you mount them. All minor stuff, I like it overall.

I bet your 460 "feels" peppier than the v-10, I've heard that from guys that went from 460 to the v-10. But, I think (I plan this in the spring after snow melts) a K&N filter charger and some duals will solve that.

I love the crew cab, though. Everybody comments on the room for a truck. Won't ever buy anything but cc again.

Love mine so far. Only 8000 miles on a 2001 and I have towed 6000 lbs from North Carolina to Miami and back getting 10.4 MPG at 70MPH with the A/C. Very strong engine. The best I have seen on mileage is just over 11 MPG. I have a customer that has over 150,000 miles on the V-10 in a E350 van that tows a 7000 lb trailer for business. He loves it.

Oh, I forgot to ask, do ya'll have the 3.73 or the 4.30 axle? The 4.30 is supposed to tow 12500lbs!!

THe 430 rear will scream and burn lots more gas ! The 373 will be fine for your boat .

32 fever ,THe squeek is the bushing between the leaf springs right at the front tip of the springs . It is a recall . they should have changed them for you . You don't like the 4x4 ? YOu must have the automatic 4x4 system . THey all suck ! Go manual . YOu can buy manual hubs .
As for the rear wheels, they are a ***** to get off ,but they are a slight press fit to keep them centered and to keep them from comeing off like the old ones when the lugs would get loose .

Thanks for the tip. I kinda figured it was the bushing on the a-arm piece, but wasnt' 100% sure, and don't remember seeing a recall....

I did drive my truck up and down the driveway once, with no lug nuts, trying to get the wheel to loosen up when I was rotating the tires. They definitely solved that problem, that's for sure.

I do have the push button 4x4. I have the Lariat with all the garbage. I don't use it often enough to worry about it. It worked pretty well this winter so far, 4 low stuck last winter. 4 high now will whistle as I drive, too. but ya know, I have so little faith in most mechanics. I do all my own maintenance. I'm not all that mechanically inclined, but neither are some of the mechanics I've seen.

Hell, one place threw away my K&N air filter in my Honda. I was so pissed. It looked dirty to that dumbass, and he threw away a $30 air filter for a $2 POS.

I HAD A 2000 WITH 4:30 AND CAME BACK FROM MICHIGAN ( OVER THE HILLY PA TURN PIKE ) WITH A 32 SUNSATION RUNNING ABOUT 75 MOST OF THE WAY @ 11 MPG. NOW I HAVE A 2001 WITH 3:73'S AND MADE THE SAME TRIP WITH A 29 SUNSATION AND GOT 13.5 MPG. JUST LOST A LITTLE POWER ON THE BIG HILL'S. BUT BOTH WERE EXCELLENT.

Excellent set-up in an Excursion with 3.73's. We towed a 30 foot cat (about 8,400 lbs. on the trailer) 2,700 miles, through mountains and across the plains with no problems. Pulled it at 75 - 85 :D :eek: in the flatlands with NO difficulty and held it's own going up the mountain passes. We averaged 10 MPG on the trip. About 12.5 to 13.0 when not towing.

After 35,000 miles great motor, great vehicle
