Life Span of a 500 EFI
 

I posted this post in the Formula section, but I think it will may better fit here since the engines are installed in a wide variety of boats.

If properly maintained, what is or should be the life span of a 500 EFI engine.

What are the recommended oil change intervals?

How many hours of use until valve spring replacement is recommended?

How many of hours until the top end or freshen needs to be done?

Should the top end or freshen be done at the same time as the valve spring replacements?

Once Freshened, how long until more work is needed? Do valve springs need to be replaced at every 250 hours?

How many hours of total use is the engine good for?

Are the valve springs a problem on the EFI's as bad as on the 500 carbs?

I know the board will have all of the answers!!!!

I bought a set of them last year with 250 hours. Both were in need of Valve springs and freshen up the top ends. The lowers on these are suposed to be bullet proof. As far as oil i change mine every 25 hrs but i am a little anal.

true the 500 need to be updated at 200 hrs from stock. valve springs and rockers.

I supercharged mine this summer with 350 hours on it. I will rebiuld at 500 hours. My frined has a Carbed 500, and hit 500 hours last season. he did the valevs at 250 hours. The engine was torn down, and rebuilt. The builder did mention that he didn't have many more hours left in the engine.

So from experience, I would say do the valve springs at 250 hours. I also recomend doing the head gaskets and lifters at 250 hours aswell. ( I had a bad lifter when I did my valves). then run the engine to 500 hours and rebuild. You 'should' have trouble free boating.
