Anyone add a kill switch to their boat?
Just wondering if anyone has done this? Is there a kit that I could buy or is this something that has to be pieced together?
Thanks in advance for the info. |
Merc makes a good kit that you can get at any dealer that comes with very good directions as to the proper hook up.
You should have one for each motor but you can just use one if you want to, but it is recommended that you use one for each. Jon |
Thanks for the response Audiofn, I dont have to worry about getting 2 :p My boat would sink with twins back there :D :D
|
Oh yeah, any idea on the price tag?
|
Jons right there are a number
of switches, I get mine from REX Marine, "Mercury" Also Get a spare cap for each motor, If driver gets wet he takes caps with him. Lanyards are extra. Mike J. |
Todd, I bought one for the Foul last spring for $20 at Wolfs Marine in Benton Harbor (their annual spring sale, free food, good prices, etc...). Never installed it!!! Need to do it if I want to run in the shootout at LOTO this summer (required). You can get them at just about any dealer. In your boat, I would DEFINITEY recomend one!!!!

Yeah, I have one. It's sort of a must have in my boat.

Mike good point about the extra cap. I have them on my boat. :D :D
|
I've already got one in mine, but I'm gonna add one for the passengers. I've come close to spitting someone out before!
|
will the merc switches work on an older boat,
I've got a 1968 donzi that needs one h/m with a volvo outdrive? Thanx Mattyboy |
The switches are really great, in many years of boating, only pulled it once (as I went overboard) But DO NOT give them to passengers. If you happens to come out, and you coast away about 1/4 mile, you'll need to go back and rescue them. While you're fumbling around looking for the cap to restart, you may loose you're overboard passenger.

ps; it doesn't matter how much they cost, if you save someone life it will be the cheapest accessory you ever buy!

Here is a copy of hte text from CP Performance web site.
This is the ONLY switch to run IMHO It could allow you or a passenger to restart the boat without hte lanyard. I have the KS-22 in my boat for hte twin emgine use. single is 19 bucks twin is 22 bucks CHEAP insurance Part No. : 855-KS-2 Category Brand Name Electrical - Kill Switches T & H Marine Saf-T-Stop Cut Off Switch - Single I/O with Coiled Lanyard For all inboard/outboard, inboard, dual inboard/outboard and dual inboard installations. Meets requirments of existing law covering mandatory use of emergency stop switches. Extra strong cloth covered self-retracting lanyard. Black matte finish for attractive appearance. Mounts in a 1-1/2'' diameter hole. Overall dimensions of switch housing are 2-3/4'' x 2'' and requires 1-1/2'' behind panel. Dual engine switches provide two completely isolated circuits to prevent feedback from on engine to the other. |

All the switch does is break the run wire coming off the ignition switch, thats why it will crank but wont fire with the switch pulled.
|
Thanks for the information!!

I just bought one from here http://www.boatfix.com/ It was under $20 as I recall. It is sitting here on my table. Now if I could only get the boat back from the mechanic, I could install it.

mine will NOT crank with it off
