I've heard the volvo's shift a little smoother than a merc.

If a Volvo shifts smoother than your Bravo, your shift cable could be out of adjustment or your outdrve hasn't had the necessary gear set upgrades recommended by MerCruiser. It's not a good idea to run a Bravo drive with the shift cable out of adjustment for very long. The shift fork rides on the gear the whole time the engine is running and the metal ends up in the oil.

Volvo's not likely to re-enter the performance market again - too small. Since the DP-R is designed to handle 800 lb-ft of torque, it would seem like a good candidate, but like all duo-props it generates a lot of drag at speeds much over 80-85. I've heard rumors of one with a 650 in front of it at Innovation.
Still have those two 1:59 DPX-HP's, by the way....
If anyone gets a chance to ride in an IPS-equipped cruiser - do it! Simply amazing: fly-by-wire integrated drivetrain, both the diesel engine and the drive unit. Merc's cobbled-up Cummins/ZF "Zeus" system is a joke in comparison.
Still have those two 1:59 DPX-HP's, by the way....

80-85 is fine. i'm more than willing to sacrifice some speed off the top for all the other benefits of the DP. i was wondering if the DPR was suitable for use of the 24 or 28 batboats? it looks dimensionally similar to the X and it has the integrated steering. Its a shame they left the HP game but it really isn't their strongest market even though they made a fantastic drive.
still trying to come up with some $$ for those parts, Thanks

Volvo-Penta make a great power package. 
The only knock on VP is that no one makes after-market performance upgrades for it.
If you are looking for a good, dependable, stock power package, VP is an excellent choice.

The shop that just rebuilt my 89 King Cobra tried to talk me into a Volvo SX before he rebuilt my lower unit. He says they would handle around 500 hp. But with the transom assy. and all , I couldnt handle the $7500. So , fixed the cobra, which he did a good job on for $2500. Parts was a real b)(*&h to find though.
