Why are Surface Drives So Expensive?
Surface drives look simple enough, basically a drive shaft going through a tube with bearings. They certainly look less complex than an outdrive. Yet they are several times more expensive than most outdrives (#6 drives excluded), and the props are in some cases near 10 times more expensive. Even the non-articulating surface drives, with a rudder for steering are expensive, yet I can't think of anything simpler. Maybe someone can enlighten us.

If Mercruiser would sell the same number of drives as Arneson and the others combined ,
they would cost much higher as well .The bronze Arneson models's cost make more sense though . I've made my own scale Arneson for my Prather back in the early 80's , because there was none produced at that time . Here's the model http://www3.telus.net/spectrasonly/Prather%20custom%204 Today you can even buy # 6 drives http://www3.telus.net/spectrasonly/W...ives,%20rc.jpg |
