Question about BDS Blowers
I have a BDS blower 10-71 question is what side does the tentioner go on. Its a smooth pulley meaning it usually rides the back sode of the belt, not ribbed side. Every blower set uip for the most part i see is the other way. Any help on this

Put it on the no-load side, which would be the starboard side of the motor. As you look at it from the front, put it on the left. It doesn't really matter if you put it on the inside(toothed side) or outside(smooth side). I prefer to put it on the outside (smooth side). Hope this helps, Eddie.

The above picture in post 2 is the way I used to do it. Since then I have been told to run the tension pulley on the outside of the belt to keep the upper pulley more fully wrapped. It will grab more teeth.
I am attaching a photo that may help. Hard to see.
I keep the belt a little loose with about an inch of deflection. The engine will grow with heat and blow the belt as I have been told. Proof was I used to keep the belt tight like all other v belts and on a hard run the engine sheared every cog off the belt.

The only way it will put to much tension on the snout is if the belt is to tight. If it is to tight, it will either take the teeth off the belt or break the snout. It can also tear up the front main bearing by pulling up to hard on the snout of the crank. As Brad said, about an inch of deflection(each way from center) is a good place to start. Check it after a hard run to be sure it still has some play. An aluminum headed motor needs a little more slack than a cast iron headed motor because they grow a little more. Eddie
