NEED OSO help from members to save LOTO SHOOTOUT
 

Have been at the lake all day and the ret of the week talking to all the people involved to keep the Shootout in Osage Beach . Since OSO has somewhat make Dog Days home base for the weekly acitivities, poker runs, the OSO party, Mark the owner of Dog Days has asked for or support to get a petition and volunteer list put together so we can present it tothe water patrol to acquire the regatta permit, ther are 3 locations in the running, 1 is dog days which is in the area of alot of existing and new high end condo projects and the new high rise John Q Hammons cnvention center, the other is up past hurricane deck bridge which would not be able to handle the crowds and too far off the beaten path, and the third is horney toad, which the majority of the participations people would like to have elsewhere, and since the oss races are ther and did'nt go over very well and is in city of lake ozark should not be considered. Osage beach has been home for 20 years and the evnt and looks forward to the huge economic impact from the shootout, there has been a very good , safe course set up very near Dog Days without a bridge safety issue, We also need support from boat manufacturers, dealers, anyone involved in selling marine products, plus I know alot of you are very good friends of Dave Callan, Cosker, Dave Scott, We have 5-6 people ready willing , and able to make this work and have committed financially to get it started, I've emailed Steve and asked for his support if we could get him to post thread asking for member support it would go along ways with the people involved and showing the water patrol we really want it here and have the man power to run a safe race, This would again benefit the local firefighter, water patrol agencies, and police dept, need suggestions, ideas and support from you mebers, lets keep this tradition going, have more meetng tomorrow with some of the fireman and Mark , owner od Dog Days to put this plan in place and present to water patrol. time is of the essence as it will take all the time we have until next years event, thanks Jim Darr

Got my support and would be willing to do what I can to make sure this event continues. I have a few places at Lands End, across from Dog Days, so I would love to see it stay right there.

What about home base being at Dog Days (for crane access, docks, etc.) and having the couse run east to west from the 19to the 20 instead of the 22 to the 21? No wake zone could be set at the 17 or 18 so the annoying cruiser wakes can't get around the bend, the water would be like glass around the finish at the 20 or 21. Already have the no wake zone at the grand glaze on weekends, makes perfect sense.

Let me know what we need to do...

Where is the course going to be at Dog Days? Are people without boats going to be able to see the boats running?

BTW, what were the issues with the Horny Toad and the OSS races?

I think the main issue with having it in front of the HT is the logistics of the course. Wide open, windy and rough water.

IMO, Dog Days is the best place to have it. The start would have to be at the GG bridge and running toward the smaller mile markers.

The Shootout is far from cancelled IMO. As talked about on another site, 3 places are putting in for regatta permits to have it.

Fire districts cancel 2008 Lake Rescue Shootout; lake bar owners say race will go on

LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. - The Lake Rescue Shootout is no more. The Shootout steering committee has decided to cancel the event in 2008. That's the bad news.

The good news: The boat race is likely to continue at Lake of the Ozarks under a new name. There are two Regatta permit applications before the Missouri State Water Patrol requesting approval of a Shootout-style race for the same weekend in August.

Captain Ron's, The Horny Toad, and Dog Days in conjunction with Topsiders presented the benefits of their respective venues to the Lake Rescue Shootout Steering Committee on Tuesday, Oct. 30. After the three presentations, at about 2:30 p.m., the steering committee dropped the bombshell: the fire districts would not organize the race in 2008.

"The event has gotten so large, it has exceeded our capabilities to put it on," Jeff Dorhauer of the Osage Beach Fire Protection District said. The 14 months of planning and manpower needed the weekend of the event had spread resources too thin. "The bottom line is... when someone calls 911 that has to be our priority."

The board of directors of Lake Rescue Shootout Inc. will not release the race's name.

Dorhauer said the fire districts would have likely worked to organize the 20th Lake Rescue Shootout, but that their collective hand was forced after Shooters 21 announced it would not host the event in 2008.

As of Wednesday, Dog Days and Captain Ron's have regatta permits pending before the Water Patrol to move the event. The Water Patrol will assess all proposed locations and choose one based primarily on public safety concerns.

"We want to put the Shootout on," Captain Ron's owner Ron Duggan said. "If the Water Patrol approves our permit, we will move forward."

Captain Ron's would like to keep the Shootout tradition alive by continuing the format proven successful over the last 19 years. Duggan said the Lake West Chamber would also lend support.


If the Water Patrol signs off on Captain Ron's permit, boats could drag Aug. 23-24, 2008, between the 32 and 34 mile markers.

Dog Days' permit request would moor the boat race within the no-wake zone in the Grand Glaize Arm between the zero and 2 MM.

"The most important thing is to keep the Shootout going as a community event," said Mark Barrett of Barrett Restaurants Inc., parent company of Dog Days. "The race is suited for our location. It would be the calmest water the racers have ever had... we're protected from the westerly winds."

Barrett believes keeping the Shootout in Osage Beach would maximize the race's economic impact because of a concentration of lodging, restaurants and shopping options near the Dog Days venue.


Regardless of the Water Patrol's choice of locations, Barrett and Duggan agree the Shootout should remain a charitable event.

While Horny Toad Inc. did present before the Lake Rescue Shootout Steering Committee on Oct. 30, marketing director Lance Utley says he cannot speculate as to their intension to file a regatta permit with the Water Patrol.

"We have no concrete decision... but The Horny Toad has proven its capacity to handle a race of the Shootout's caliber," Utley said.

Regardless of the venue, it appears the Top Guns of boat racing will be coming to Lake of the Ozarks each August for the foreseeable future.
