Wow I got thrown into a mottley crowd for just not taking Griff's bet.
I agree with the above, just bring the product to market. Why debate it?
Personally I wonder why instead of a transmission someone doesn't come up with a drive with a constant speed prop setup instead but that's just me.

We see a lot of controllable pitch applications in displacement hull and low speed planing applications, but I'm not sure if the physics is there for the demands of an offshore high speed setup. One problem I see right away is having props survive when you're airing them out.
