I'd suggest selling them to some poor unfortunate soul who currently has, oh I don't know, say 496's. And start fresh!
And yea, I'd be open to parting with my 496's. |

I had mine rebuilt and loved the outcome. Bored them out to 509 blocks. Went with a hydraulic cam and Morel hydraulic lifters. Changed the fireing order. Reworked the heads. Went with MSD ignition. Arizona Speed reprogramed the ECM's. The Blower Shop rebuilt the blowers. They can make the blowers stronger but I wouldn't run them for much more than 200 hours before rebuilding, depending on how you drive it. I picked up 150 hp without intercoolers. I could have got more hp out of them with the intercoolers but wanted reliability.
If you look up 10X he can tell you more about them. He helped rebuild them. |

800+? What did the set that you showed me up at your place make? |
Build 540's out of those blocks and get the blowers rebuilt.
Put all of the parts back in and then you woun't have to run them so hard. |
What was the firing order and what did you change it too. ?[/QUOTE]
They were standard and I don't know what he changed them to. I can't check because I sold the boat. |

Wouldn't the intercoolers improve the longevity of the engines?

I thought they would too but I didn't want to make a lot of hp so they advised that I leave them off.
You must not have much boost. anything over 3.5 tends to want/need an intercooler. |
Has anyone else run the different firing order on there motors? It does make sense.

and the port engine just exceeded Merc manual spec and starboard just passed. Pulled the head and you could still see crosshatching on the cylinder walls. Oil pressure on both is just like new and they never use any between changes every 25 hours (Mobile 1). So I rebuilt the heads on the port motor (cost around $1000 after I pulled them off and reinstalled them myself). Will do starboard this year. Maybe your engines aren't really that tired. Never felt any power loss either. What prompted the heavy testing and maintenance were driveability problems ultimately discovered to be contaminated fuel filters. Pesky Varmint |
I have 575's freshened by Innovation w/ bumped boost (620 hp) and they are great! I was talking with Ron Potter (former Nor-Tech engines) when I was down in Sarasosta and he said that with relatively little work they could be very reliable 700hp motors. I am assuming he would do something similar to what JC was talking about.
