Why do we pay highway tax for gas in our Boats?
Why do we have to pay road taxes in the fuel we burn in our boats? Most of us who trailer out boats fill up at the same stations that cars/trucks fill up.
Diesel is available in highway use, and non highway use. Tugs/large boats all use non highway diesel to operate. Is our market too small to warrant a highway tax deduction on fuel in our boats? The savings would not be extraordinary, but may keep more people enjoying their boats next season. |

That answers my next question, how impossible would the paperwork be?
|
In VA it's one sheet, one side. But they do require the date, name of the station, and for some reason YOUR name has to appear the same on every reciept now...just send in the reciepts and the form, they will mail you a check in 5-6 weeks.
|
anyone know if the same applies in Oklahoma?

Alot of states have a form you can get from the station clerk or online to get you tax back. Texas does not give us our tax back for non hwy use. I am not sure if La does.

In Nebraska, you can get a refund on the hwy road tax after, I think, the first $400 in tax. So basically there is no refund unless you burn a chitload of fuel.

I believe that in NJ, if you buy at the gas dock, tax is not added to the pump price, so you're getting raped even more than you thought......what's gas tax in NJ these days? 12.5 cents?
|
Connecticut refunds the fuel tax but then charges SALES TAX! So, you get $ . 25 (approx) back. Pretty simple form you can download from the CT DRS website
|
FYI: VA is $0.165/gallon (16.5 cents per gallon)
|
Where do you check to see about this refund? Or does anyone know if Ohio gets it?
|
what about oklahoma
|
In ILL our fuel supplier delivers 1000 gallons of 100 octane at a crack or we hit the airport fuel up the boat with 300 gallons and avoid the tax

You might want to recheck into that. I believe Texas does refund tax money.

Texas does refund tax. I have filed for it in the past. One year it was easy, the next they wanted more info, log, receipts, etc. and took almost 3 months to get. You can choose whatever 12 month period you want, it doesn't need to be a Jan - Dec. calendar year. It is about 25 or 30 cents per gal you get back.
|
I figured the road use tax we pay at the marina was for the truck that used the road to get it to the marina.

I'm under that impression as well.... Even ran into a situation a while back where a marina had a pump up on land....they shut that pump down because they would be required to pay road tax if the pump was located on land. The tanks can be on land but I believe the pump has to be on the dock.... So basically, we're paying 15% more on the water but in reality it's probably more like 30% with the tax not being taken by the state... Oh yeah....I heard that NJ wants to impose a "property tax" ....on our boats/RV's... |

I didn't fill my boat at a marina once this summer... highway gas 100% as it proved to be cost effective and allowed me peace of mind in knowing that I was getting fresh(er) fuel.
According to the chart posted on page1 of this thread, NJ state gas tax is third lowest at 10.5 cents per gallon with mandatory full service stations (for insurance purposes). Alaska is cheapest at 8.0 cents per gallon probably due to the oil pipeline that runs through the state and Wyoming at 9.0 cents per gallon. Connecticut takes the prize for raping it's travelers at 36.0 cents per gallon. |

You're not kidding. I just saw on the news that Gov. Corzine is putting a plan together to raise the parkway & other tolls to help reduce the state's deficit. It never ends...

We get it all back in NH. If you use certain gas stations all the time, they do the paperwork for you.
|
What about diesel though? We religiously use off-road diesel for our compressor. A boat is not used anymore for on-road use than that thing is?
I would find it tough for anyone to bust you for using a home based transfer tank to fill up your boat with red dyed fuel. (providing it was a trailered boat) |
Road/highway tax on gas is used for roads/highways...repairs... filling pot holes.... right??
Where the hell does my taxes go when I fill up with 250gal? Smoothing out the seas?? better markers on the channels??? yeaah rrright. I have to check into the rebate and paperwork in Fla. THe problem is most gas stations here only let you buy $50 or $75 at a time. When I did the Sarasote PR I went to 3 gas stations just to fill up. and I was still only 3/4 full. Grrrrr But ..Thx... good point with this thread. |
W.K. good, thanks, MA does refund, need to save sales slips to file !
|
Not sure I am reading the attached form right, but does "REF" mean you can get the tax money back? I am in Michigan and would like to look into it as I always fill at inland stations.

Ohio, .22/gallon refund, sounds good to me
See 2(b) Here's what I found in Ohio: 2. Persons who have purchased motor vehicle fuel on which the fuel tax has been paid may receive a refund under the following conditions (R.C. 5735.13, 5735.14, 5735.141, 5735.142, 5735.18): (a) Fuel used in the following ways: to operate or propel stationary gas engines; tractors used for off-highway purposes; unlicensed motor vehicles used exclusively in intraplant operations. (b) Motor fuel used by watercraft in the following ways: vessels used entirely for commercial purposes such as trade or fishing; vessels used in Boy Scout training; vessels used or owned by railroad car ferry companies; vessels used or owned by federal, state, and local governments. (c) Fuel used for cleaning or dyeing. (d) Motor fuel used by local transit systems except for the one-cent bond retirement levy. (e) Motor fuel used in aircraft. (f) One percent of the motor fuel tax paid on fuel purchased by retailers to cover losses from shrinkage and evaporation. (g) Fuel lost or destroyed through theft, fire, explosion, lightning, and other natural disasters. (h) Any person, other than a dealer, who sells the fuel or uses the fuel outside Ohio, or who sells the fuel to the U.S. Government or any of its agencies. |
NH gives 18 cents per gallon back. Here is a link to the form
