JL Audio Hookup?

Did a quick search through here and saw there used to be some OSO guys with JL Audio hookups....however those were from '05/'06. Anyone around now that can set me up with a reasonable price?

I'm relatively new to boating and WAY new to marine audio. I am, however, somewhat fluent in home theatre. I'm assuming marine should work similarly.....choose a speaker first and work backwards through the system from there.

Right now my boat has a serioulsly old set up (unknown if the speakers even still work). Presently running 2 Clarion 6.5" in cockpit and two in the cabin.

Looking at four JL Audio M650 CCX's and possibly their 4 channel amp to run the cockpit. Not so much worried about the cabin right now. Also, funding is too tight to get into subs at this time. Also, how important is the head unit? I'm looking at going Sirius and must be i-Pod compatible. Other than that, I don't need a whole lot of fancy bells and whistles and would not mind offsetting some costs here if feasible....say Clarion or JBL over Alpine if there's no serious sound-quality difference.

Appreciate any help!

Crutchfield is now an autherized dealer. Along with Overtons. I think they might be a little pricy thru them though.

For the best pricing, internet sites such as Wooferset are hard to beat. Be forwarned they don't come with a warrenty even thought they claim.

I went thru my JL dealer in town, who pretty much matched the internet pricing. I have warrentys plus supporting a local business.

I would use ebay. Probably won't get an actual warranty, but most of the bigger sellers will warranty items for a specific time.

When you buy JL you really have no warranty even if they are new.....I was a JL dealer for a long time prior to selling my car audio store in March of 07.....

JL by FAR was the worst manufacture for warranty work...Your buying a name when you buy JL.....You have about as much luck getting warranty work out of JL as other members have getting orders filled from Trick

Okay....open to suggestions. Budget can go up to about $800/$900 but would probably need to include installation in that figure so hardware is limited to $600/$700 assuming a non-complicated install. So...what's everyone like??
Looking for:
Head Unit
4 Speakers (6.5")
Amp
Sirius

Griff 11-27-2007 02:07 AM

Do you need a waterproof head unit???

If not, Clarion M475. Its marine, but not waterproof. About $150 on ebay. If you need waterproof, then go to a Clarion CMD5 for around $250.

Alpine pdx 100.4 amp--puts out 100watts rms x 4. They are small and don't get very hot. About $300 on ebay.

MB quart 6.5's will be alot less money than the JL's and depending on which ones you get will run $100-140/pair.

Its gonna be tough to do it at $600-700 equipment budget unless you skip the amp now and add it later.

Question...I've got a line on four JL M-650's for about $180 per pair. Would you still recommend the MB's or pay the extra for the JL's?

robpcfs 11-27-2007 07:17 AM

Check this guy out on Ebay- caraudioemart - I just bought: 2pair 6.5 spkrs, 2 pair 7.7 spkrs, 2- 10" subs and 3- M4300 4ch amps -All JL Audio Marine series and he was BY FAR the best deal out there.. All of it is new production, not old stock. Shipping price seemed high until I recieved and saw how everything was packed. He was great with communications and everything shipped right away...
I bought the Clarion CMD5 with remote for my head unit (bought it local and paid to much) its a very nice unit. The CMD4 is about $80 less and the only thing you give up is the Bluetooth. And both are "waterproof"
Hope this helps! Rob

I don't have any personal experience with either one, so I can't vouch for sound quality or longevity. I have read good things about both though.
I had a Clarion head unit similar to m475(older model) and was very happy with it.
I have freinds using the Alpine PDX amps and they are extremely happy with them.

I'm currently shopping for my new stereo stuff as well for my AT. I'm going to go with the m475 and the Alpine PDX series amps. I'm probably going to use at least some DC Gold(formerly Babb) speakers, but am also considering some from Diamond Audio. I haven't quite decided yet. DC Gold does not make a 6.5 yet, but has one in the works. I had 4 Babb 6x9's in my Pantera and they ROCKED!!!!! and put out a ton of bass.

flat rate 11-27-2007 07:47 PM

I would buy Diamond Audio speakers on ebay. I bought 5 pairs of 6.5's and 3 10's to replace all the speakers in my boat and they rock. I will never own another JL speaker. You can buy a pair of Diamond 6.5's for $115.00 on ebay. They look like little subs.

wet_rat 11-27-2007 08:36 PM

I use Polk MMC650 in one of my boats. They are marine rated, have an adjustable tweeter, built with high quality materials, look and sound incredible. $100 shipped on ebay

Have ya had any blow? I have a American Offshore that I am thinking about up grading the system in:D

Griff 11-27-2007 08:56 PM

Diamond has several different levels of speakers. D1, D3's, D6's, D9's and HEX. Get at least the D6 line. They will handle much more power. 6.5's in D3 are 60watt rms and 120peak. D6's are 100w rms and 200wpeak.

I have not priced them on ebay since I have a freind who is an authorized dealer.

OSO 11-27-2007 09:00 PM

I have a pair of JL 650's brand new in the box but the 180 price you got sounds cheap.

I had MB's and hated them.

Let me know if the other sets don't work out for you.

No and I drive them hard.

Griff 11-27-2007 09:18 PM

These are a good deal. Covers only come in black so you have to paint them if needed.

Go to walmart and buy the stereo there with the tv in it. We have to of them lovem. cheap but the moves play great
Just try to remember this stuff gets beat up pretty good in a boat. We have four amps one of our amps for the subs is a 2000 watt earthquake cheap but sure pushes our 6 subbs 4 12's 2 10's the rest of the three is foggate and a bunch of batteries

It's a local BoatTunes doing a 2 for 1 special on them. The deal DOES seem good. Are they worth the extra $90 for 2 pair (after tax) over the Diamond D-6's??

Ryan8886 11-28-2007 07:36 AM

Here's what I've cobbled together after a night scrounging the internet:

Head unit: Alpine CDA-9885 $233.00
Sirius: Sirius Connect SIR-ALP1 $89.99
Speakers: JL Audio M650 CCXW $380.00 ( 2 pair-local shop after tax)

Opinions?

I always had Alpine in my cars and liked them. I was way impressed with the Clarion head unit I had in my boat. I would save the $$$ and go with the Clarion M475.

Griff,

Looked at the numbers and seems you, as usual, are correct in your observation.....the 475 has louder, cleaner output than the Alpine unit. Did you have the M475? How complicated to operate?

btw- ended up buying the JL Audio's today.....figured a legit purchase at about $190 a pair was too good to pass on.

Griff 11-30-2007 03:29 AM

I didn't have the M475, but it is the head unit I'm going to use when I do my stereo in a few months. I had basically the same, but an older model that I installed in my last boat. It didn't have as many options since the sirus and ipod wasn't as popular. It was very simple to use. Originally, I had it installed w/o an amp and just 4 Babb 6x9's. It sounded as good as many stereo's that had amps. I wanted louder so I installed a 4x65 watt rms RF amp and it most people couldn't believe I didn't have a sub hidden somewhere.

That is a very good price for the JL's.

It's the best price I've seen around. BTW- for anyone in metro Detroit/southeast Michigan, Car Tunes/Boat Tunes are running 2 for 1 on all their speakers through tomorrow....possibly to next Saturday.

Back to the M475....I may go with that, Griff. A sub and amps just aren't in the budget right now, so I need a unit that will push good, clean sound at volume. Thanks for the help! :drink:

Babbs rock! Best speaker I've ever had.
I have 2 6x9's and 2 5 1/4's. I swear they thump more than my 2 10" JL subs!

Yep, I feel the same way. The new Babb--DC Golds are my current plan for new speakers. Just haven't decided on what sizes for sure. Going with 8 speakers most likely.

How do you like the 5 1/4's??????

I think I'm going to get (2) 10's, and either (2) 6x9's and (4) 5 1/4's or (2) 10's, (4) 6x9's and (2) 5 1/4's. Kind of depends on where I decide to mount them.

Like em alot. I have them mounted up high in the sides, with the 6x9's down in the rear seat. The 6x9s have more bass to them. I have the 2 10" subs on a mono amp and the 4 Babbs on a 4 channel amp with the pass's set for such on each and still get a good thump from the Babbs. I'd like to mount 2
5 1/4's up high at the front, but no room. So stuck with the high/low combo setup for now.
