Motors which is best?

My buddy currently has a 1990 34 excel. He is looking to repower to get more hp. He is on a budget and needs the best deal he can get. Here's two different motors that are being offered to him right now.

One person has a pair of 525scs with 174 blowers with 550hp. These motors have between 25-50 hours. He wants things to match up as best as possible as he is on a low budget. The guy currently has Crossovers on them were not too sure how those work but he really wants to figure out a way for his fwc to work.

The other choice is buying 454 mags. The guy with the 454 mags has them stored on a shelf in a local marine shop. He said he would have them totally gone through new parts shipped like brand new motors with 500hp. These 454's would match up as they are the same year as the boat.

For the same price which do you think would be best. And if you could give me any clue on how crossovers work i would greatly apperciate it. As there is a low budget he wants an engine that will last and low maint.

I have a pair of the 525SC's in a 38 Donzi zx with about 225 hours on them with no problems at all. They have always run perfect and i run them pretty hard. Toss on a pulley and intercooler and i have been told 600+ is not a problem.

I also have 454 mags in my Scarab that run great as well. these with about 550 hours and still run'in strong. either motor should fit your application but i think i like the SC's better.

They don't sound like real 525SC's. 525SC's have weiand 177 blowers. My 525SC was a great engine. Its still living well somewhere with over 500hrs on it and just a top end refresh.

My biggest issue with both sets of engines would be who built them and how reputable are they.

Why not rebuild his??? so he knows exactly what he has.
Also, year of engines in the boat really does not matter to anybody as long as they know what they are.

The 525scs are already built and producing supposely around 550 hp. They only have 25-50 hours as you see.

The 454's the guy is going to have built up by a place called cornettthunder.com . I guess they build high hp engines for race cars. They are out of Kentucky. He said the guy would work from the bottom up and redo engine to meet specs to have 500hp.

He doesnt have the money to purchase engines and have them gone through before he puts them in. So he's looking for something that hopefully he will have no problems with for a few years.

I'd go with the 525SC if it is a real 525SC.

Big difference between race car engines and marine engines.

Are his current engines destroyed?????? Why not rebuild them???

bgchuby01 12-17-2007 12:52 PM

race car engines are different, use a guy who is familiar with marine style engines

chuckd1025 12-17-2007 02:34 PM

His current engines are 2 bolt main truck engines. So he is wanting to switch those out for either one of these marine engines.

It's either choose a naturally aspirated 500hp 454 or a 525scs blown with 550 hp. both the same money. one would be brand new completely gone through the other with 25-50 hours.

I know anytime you buy this type of thing without knowing who did it or whats been done its taking a chance. But when you dont have deep pockets you have to take more chances. Which do you guys believe would be the best in this situation.
