Need advice rigging a R/C boat
I'm building a twin engine radio controlled cat. Should I place the drives close together, or spread them out? Let me know.

I've never built a twin engined RC boat, but my first thought would be to mount them close together since having them closer would minimize the effect of having the two slightly out of synch rpm wise.
I don't think that heat would be a problem. What hull are you using? I've got a very trick Lap Cat II with a Mutant Ninja Turtle in the Cockpit. |
Its an Aeromarine hull. I'm going to stager the engines because of fit, but there is enough flexibility in the driveline that I can place the drives wherever I want.

Hi Madcow. I'm getting ready to rig one of my hulls. I've never done one but I've got enough room to mount one engine in each sponson. I'ts a true cat with a tunnel all the way down the middle,no pad. What engines are you thinking of using? I think I will try two of the ones from Warehouse Hobbies. I already have the drives. Maybe we can compare notes at the next L.E.O.P.A. meeting?

Hey Phat, whats up. I heard you scrach built a hull. Souds cool. I'm running 4 electrics through 2 steerable outdrives. It's just a little 29" cat that I want to be able to keep in the boat all the time, and play with at the marina. On full size cats the drives are always far apart, but is that for performance or because thats the only way the engines will fit in there?

yo mad cow. . . .did we get an aproval on the colors. . .by the way i got bak from renos shop about 7:30 or 8:00 pm . he JUST started priming the boat, he is going to have a long night.do you have AOL instant messanger?

Dave, Colors are a go. Hey I need to fill a couple of hole in the transom on this boat. They are about 1/8 of an inch. The transom is a little over 1/4" thick. Can I plug them with bondo, or should I back them with glass?
|
yea use fiberglass, bondo wont hold very long by itself, just put a small piece of cloth on the inside of the hole than fill from the outside after it has dried, than prime and paint.i will try to call you tomorow afternoon.i have a class in the morning

Sounds good Dave. Should be around all day.

Madcow,
Wally posted a few months ago about R/C boats. There are a few guys on the board that have some nice stuff. Here is a link to one site that may help. http://www.piracing.com/PhotoGallery.htm If you are using the miniature drives be aware they are not the most efficient way of going fast. If you want something that will do around 20MPH they should be fine. If you want to go fast they don't work. As for the engines. If you want to play around then the warehouse hobbies Homelite's should be fine. I wanted to build a boat until I realized how expensive they are. The Quick draw engines that will get you in the 50's were over $1,200.00 dollars. I promised someone a couple of months ago to post some pictures of a buddy’s 72" Scarab. I will still post if my buddy ever gets around to sending them. I think Satisfaction69 got in on that thread also. Good luck and post some pictures when you are finished. Dan |
