How do I get a prop lock off iff I dont have the key??
I picked up my new(used) outboard today, and I went to take off the old prop, and install mine, but the damn thing has what looks like a wheel lock holding it on insead of the nut. I will call the shop that sold the motor to me on monday, but I dont think they will have it. Any Ideas???

die grinder took mine off. just cut the outer case and remove the nut.
|
I've heard you can get them off by using 2 screw drivers and then a wrench or tool to turn the screw drivers. You insert the screw drivers down inside the lock. Then use the wrench / tool to turn the screw drivers to remove the lock. Good luck.

Go to sears and buy the sockets that are used for removing rounded off nuts. These sockets grab into the nut and then come off as normal. I used them to get the lug nuts off a corvette when the previous owner had no idea where the key was.

jam a smaller socket on it and then turn it.....
|
You can draw a picture of the pattern and fax it to Mcguard and they will sell you a new key. They only have about 4 or 5 keys.
Good luck! MP |
well, it wasnt as easy as a wheel lock.
good product, took me about 3 hours, and 7 dremel cutting wheels to cut off the ring around it, then I could jam the socket on, and get it off, all without scratching the prop. Anyone need a 17 mirage?? |

Prop Locks
Park your boat on the street, and someone will do it for you.:D:D

I got some clay from an arts and craft store ( my wifes suggestion), made an impression, heated it to harden , and sent it to McGard. Worked perfectly.

sacrifice a socket and bang it on the lock.
|
This might sound to easy, but why not weld a nut to it and then use a normal wrench?

The stainless collar will spin, The nut is brass, I would think the collar would have to be off to get to the nut to weld a nut on it. On mine once I got the collar off I tried channel locks but the nut was to tight. Once I got the collar off I cut grooves in the nut ,beat a socket on it ,it came right off then.Thats if its a Mcguard. My 2 cents:D |
I drove a couple of smal chisels in between the collar and the nut and used a pair of big channel locks. Took about 15 minutes.
|
Judging by all the successful methods described here, I guess we can assume those prop locks are worthless, now can't we??? :D

The sixes are easier.
I cut the stainless ring off with a whizer. Then I grabed the brass nut with a pipewrench. Still waiting for Adrien at Teague to send me another. There just a theft deterent. |
Thanks for all the replies guys, I got it off, just took a while, used the whizzer wheel method, just had to get really small ones for the dremel.
I Like Gino's reply, problem is........................... They would have taken the whole motor!!!! |

Actually the easiest way is to take another mcgard socket that isn't the same n just hit it on the lock with the ribs in between the slots of yours till it makes it own grooves and put the rackhet on the socket and turn total time 5 minutes.Have done it atleast 5 times when prop lock sockets where missed placed. The lock is made of bronze so the material is soft and you end up making your own slots on the lock but you only get maybe 1-2 trys.Try it you will be amazed how easy the locks are to take off.The locks are worthless in my book.

Rich how hard do you have to hit it to make new teeth?I would figure that would be bad on the bearings? |
