designing a cat
Hey guys, its late and im bored so i am goofing around in auto-cad designing a cat. I have always loved the look of the USA racing cats and that is loosely what i am designing this boat around. I know the boats performance was questionable, however, i like the look and overall lines of the boat. That look is what im going for.
I have absolutely no performance cat knowledge. But my question before i get started is on most respected cats what is the tunnel width in comparison to the beam? What i have drawn out so far is a 38' loa, 12' beam at its max, and 11' at the transom. As of right now the tunnel is 6' wide down the entire length of the boat. This leaves makes the sponson 2'-6" at the transom and just a tad over 3' at the max beam. Does this sound about right? Or am i way off? This is not a project i intend to build, its just for fun, but when i do something i try to do it right. Any advice is appreciated. Rob |
check out
boatdesign.net More info over there for the design side of boating |
I think your tunnel is toowide, and the rear of the sponsons are too narrow for big motors.
|
your probably right now that i think of it... i have no experince with these types of boats... im use to outboards.. something ill have to look in to. Thanks
|
any idea on how wide the sponsons should be in the rear? 3'? 4'? thanks
|
3ft would work.
|
Thanks for all of the replys

tunnel should be in the 66" range, which is what the new mti's and skaters have 3' on the sponsons at max, a 38' cat should have a beam of between 10'-11', 12' is just too wide. post some pics after your done

Here is what i have so far.. i got distracted last night so i only have maybe 30 minutes in this. What do you guys think?
The white line on the side is the "crease" like cigarettes have. I havent drown the line for the chine yet. Now i have to divide it up in sections so i can draw each bulkhead. |
Looks Cool! MY dad has lots of experience with USA Cats.
|
Hey.. .thanks! What do you guys think about the lines? I like them... but id like to hear some honest opinions from others.
Rob Also i forgot to mention after you guys mentioned it and i thought about it, a 6' tunnel seemed rediculous. In the drawings above i have gone back and changed it to a 4' tunnel. |

Ha Ha Ha good one Brownie !!! Best of the holidays to you. |
WOW - 11 lines drawn, and it resembles a cat. I think you need to dig a little deeper and do some research.
Next time you post pics of this, try using the Print Screen button, and then paste it into Word or Excel, and then post the link - it will look much better. |
Im planning on working on it some more and making some changes. Havent really had any more time to work on it because of the holidays... I dont have to work this week so hopefully i will be able to get some more work done on it.

That would be a Good Idea! :D good luck with it ! |
you might want to try a design software that is better suited for this type of project. I use http://www.rhino3d.com/, its very powerful and i think you can get an evaluation copy that has everything you will need.
|
i am eventually going to get something of that nature. I will be starting west lawns naval architecture / yacht design program after new years, so eventually i will have to get something more advanced for that. Right now im just goofing around practicing in auto cad.
|
Awsome plan. I use autocad as well, you can get Rhino at a smokin deal as a student. oh and one other thing if the dashed line represents the top of the tunnel it will need to be much more linear. This is what the boat rides on at speed and that much rocker would make it very interesting indeed. have fun wit it :D.
Check out some of the stuff in the gallerys, they mave some marine specific tools, the possibilities are endless. http://gallery.mcneel.com/?language=en&g=3 |
Awesome! Ill have to checkout the link. I have pushed the cat aside for now and im working on a mono. I decided there are too many things i dont know about cats right now so im going to do some more research before i mess with a cat.
