With regards to the NXT extension box, what transmission are they running in there? Could you put a Bam trans in there and run a #6 off the back that way no trans is in the engine compartment?

I had heard that the Bravo to NXT required some changes. I thought the transom cut out was different at a minimum. Do you know anyone that has tried the conversion that could comment on it?

-Tom It's pretty small, here's a few breakdown pics http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...Shift+Cover%29 http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...voir%2FPump%29 http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...t+And+Gears%29 http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...28Tailstock%29 |
In looking at the parts breakdown, it looks like the NXT transmission has the same cone clutch as a Bravo. Even retains one of the upper gears?
Very interesting as the cone clutch was always one of the big failure points on a Bravo. |

Very interesting as the cone clutch was always one of the big failure points on a Bravo. Part #'s are different than say an XR. I would imagine they beefed it up. It looks like they just rotated the components 90*. The top gear is now the fwd gear/input , the pinion is a idler and the bottom gear is the reverse gear. |

The only problem was a bunch of misajusted shift cables, resulting in some smoked trannys. But it wasn't Merc's problem. Very good package overall.

Hard to get out of forward
Yes, con you elaborate about sticking in gear with misadjusted cables. One is smooth as silk and other is hard to get out of forward. Started at about 25 hours on them. In service now.

No problems yet 100 hours.

The thread request was for personal experience...NO HEARSAY. JUST THE FACTS. Rumors are just that...and I have heard them as well, but not one from someone that actually owned or serviced an NXT; that is why I initiated this thread, to flush out any REAL problems.
