8'6" Is Too Low!!!

Well, it's been a while since I posted any mishaps. I have a new one that I'm sure many will shake their heads at. How many of us have seen trucks stuck under overpasses that are too low and you can only thin "what a moron". Well.....
I went to pick my buddy up at the Miami airport with my BRAND NEW freightliner with 211 miles. That airport is so confusing! I followed some busses in but they veered left to a "busses only" lane. I kept going straight. Coming up to the underpass it looked really low and it said 8'6". I quickly thought I was here in my old freightliner so should be ok. WRONG, New truck is 7" higher and the wing on top is at a different angle that makes it higher.
After the loudest boom and scraping you ever heard, I had to back up the traffic, back out from under where I was stuck. Turn the truck around and drove out of the airport terminal on the IN lanes!! Lots' of flashing headlights, cars pulling off, dirty looks and middle fingers. But I escaped with a ruined wing could have been much worse!!! For future reference 8'6" is too low!!

Well it didn't take you long into the new year to have a mishap. Lucky thats all you did ! I have been waiting for a good Gino mishap for a while now! Glad not to read too much from you , I was really worring that something from that black cloud that follows you around was gonna strike you down! Have a great new year :drink:

This had nothing to do with luck. just good old plain stupidity!

I thought I was going to hit at the Houston airport one time in my truck, some of those places are on the low side, as far as clearance goes

Gino,

Visit a U-Haul service center- you're nowhere near alone on this one!

Two weeks ago I had one of our shop trucks- using it to pick up a pallet of stuff a buddy had sent me. The terminal lot is under construction and muddy- on the way back, I figured I'd buzz thru and pressure-wash it. I neglected to remember we had a new vertical comprssor strapped to the bed for delivery the next morning. As I pulled into t he "tall" bay I always use, I hear a massive crunch and a shudder. My memory suddenly returned. Not only did I do $20K in damage to the roof of the car wash, I destroyed an $8K compressor.

Since every conversation around here starts and ends with my incessant preaching about safety and paying attention, I've been getting those looks pretty much all the time now.

Back in 1990 I use to drive a refrigerated box truck for my daytime job. I played in bands at night and drove this truck around early in the day picking up food at cold storage units in LA and delivering it to schools. One day I was jonesing for a Snickers bar and had to pee really bad so I pulled off of of I-10 right into a UnoCal 76 station and went under the cover over the fuel pumps taking it all down and cutting a major part of the top of the box on the truck off. the Iranian that owned and ran the station was sooo pizzzed! My boss was not happy either.

Two years ago, going to a high-performance swap meet with my old Super Duty, a lost a couple bullet lights off the top of the truck in the parking ramp. Don't always trust the yellow bar at the entrance. After 20 years in operation, I don't think the maintenance guys use the tape measure anymore when they run pipes in the parking garage!!!

Wrong Info

The overpass wasn't too low,the road was too high !:evilb::evilb:

wananewboat 01-13-2008 09:11 AM

Gino, I hope the old ticker didn't need a jump start after that one. Always look on the bright side, you could have had the boat behind you.

waterboy222 01-16-2008 12:44 AM

Tan Tara resort at LOTO owns a layer of clear coat off the top of my superduty.. they need a new tape measure! The clamps on the sprinkler system should have been measured too, not just the roof!

my wife and i were on our first trip out of town together before we got married. a undergound parking garage got me the yellow bars are never the right height, i saw a couple superdutys like mine on the first level thought they fit so can i, i even asked valet parking if i would fit, they said yeeaaa in broken english so down i went, needless to say the farther down i went the less height there was, oh and did i mention i have a sunroof in my brand new truck, pipe hanger got the roof, ALL OF IT WHAT A MESS "f*&k"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

otis311 01-17-2008 07:43 AM

Gino, I did a similar thing last week with a brand new enclosed cab farm tractor that I bought last month. I had it on a lowboy trailer and we decided to go to the carwash and wash the truck and hose down the tractor after a job we just completed. I had someone spoting as we pulled in with the trailer knowing it would be close on hieght. As my spotter said your fine I heard this sickening crunch. There is or should I say was a roof vent and fresh air intake for the a/c on top of the cab roof that you couldnt see from the ground

1500.00 later all better
