prop question
What is usally faster, mirage or labbed bravo, for a 24 outlaw 502 mag? Would my drive shower inlet tube sticking an inch or so below the cavitation plate cause my prop to slip?
your drive shower pickup is behind the prop.. it should have nothing to do with slip. Most of the time a 3 blade is faster, but with 4 blades you get higher cruising MPH, better holeshot etc... :)

It feels like my prop is slipping most of the time, but I'm not used to my new boat yet, only had it out 3 times, so I was wondering if a labbed bravo might grab better and go faster :p
ooops wrong smile
you mean slipping coming outta the whole or it just doesn't feel right? a 4 blade would reduce the slip figure...
what kinda rig is this. boat, motor, drive etc.. |
Blows out above 3,000 coming on plane, and does not feel right at wot its a 1997 24 outlaw 502 bravo 1 spinning a 23'' 3 blade at 5050 at 68-69 mph
A 4 blade would help... hmm I am stil thinkin....
i'm thinking mabye a labbed 24'' bravo
that should help. being 4 blade, 24" bravo and labbed, it would get more bite and bring the RPM's down a little, so holeshots wouldn't break lose that bad.. plus a 4 blade might make you feel more secure at WOT. You can only experiment bud ;)
I can probably borrow a non-labbed 24 from my buddy at the baja dealership, I wonder how much difference labbing will make
I have the same hull. I hate 3 blades on it. 4 blades handle better. Hole shot is better (but I never shoot for a quick hole shot, feather it up onto plane then get into it, better for the drive). Cruising mph is better. When I switched from 3 to 4 blades (same pitch) I lost about 1-2 mph but used less gas and could hold better when cornering. Also helps in rough water to keep the bow down (or up as the case may be).

theres the man i was waiting for to post.. :D
Waterfouls boat.. damn what a ride :D :D |
I can't trim very much without blowing out, mabye 3/8 or 1/2 on the trim gauge and the bow does'nt seem to come up near enough
Asset, do yourself a favor, give up the 1 mph or so and get yourself a 4 blade prop. Get a non-labbed one and give it a try before you spend the extra dough on the labbing. You will like the results. It may only go 67 mph now, but you'll get there quicker and use less fuel. And you will carry your bow better. This I KNOW!!!
Then when you are confident that the prop you bought is THE prop, get it labbed and you will probably get your 1-2 mph back. I'd hate to see you spend all the money on a labbed prop and have it be the wrong pitch. |
LIQUID, I have a 24 Outlaw also and have about 420hp. I run a 14.75" 23 Mirage Plus. It never blows out coming on plane as long as the drive is all the way down and it holds good in the turns as well. The Mirage plus has more cupping than the regular Mirage and from talking to others, I'm sure the extra cupping is helping me grab better out of the hole. I tried a Revoltion4 last summer and did not like it. It gave too much stern lift and was no better out of the hole or in turns than my Mirage Plus and lost about 4mph on the top. I have not tried a Bravo. Good Luck and I would test as many props as possible to find out what you prefer. In general, labbing will add about 200rpms and 1-2mph.
That sounds like a plan, Thanks for the imformation. If yall ever come to Texas let me know and we'll have a beer or two :D
Griff is right about the Plus prop. It will handle better. And the Bravo 1 is a bow lifting prop.
Griff and Waterfoul, How fast, rpm prop and h.p. are yall running?
Sounds like you may have a bad prop. Try a new 23 mirrage + before you try a 4 blade. You will be at least 3 mph faster with the 3 blade. Lab finishing will get you about 300 rpm. That is what I gained on both of my engines.
About 350 hp or so. 60 mph. 22" Powertech prop (which I hate, but havn't had the money to replace).
I ran Vern's (from the board) 22" Bravo One (kinda dinged up from his inland lake boating) this summer. Made one pass at just over 60, into the wind. Turned around to make another pass and had engine trouble so we got towed in (embarassing!!). Screw came lose on my carb and ended up in cylinder #5. Down for a week. Didn't get a chance to run his prop again. But, I think that's the prop I need with this motor. I should also add that I raised my X-dimension several years ago. Didn't seem to affect handling or speed much. But, I don't have to trim nearly as much to get top speed. |
Ive heard that the mirage props are not trued from the factory (local prop guy) I wounder if you got one that was out of wack if that would cause the problems your talking about
He said that one blade on a 23" mirage may be 22, one 23 and one 24 making it seem like a crap prop. He did a friend of mines mirage and claimed it was that way. After labbing and trueing, he gained 300rpms and better handling. He tends to add a little **** to what he says, so i dont know if its true or not, but I know Im going to give it a try on mine. Alot of props only come in 2 inch pitch incriments 23, 25, 27 etc. ao thay can vary plus or minis a 25 could be 23 or 27. Thats why I stick with Hydromotive most of the time. There props are produced in 1 inch incriments.

Liquid, I'm about 420hp +/- with mildly modified 454mag. I see about 63-64 at 5200 rpms. The amount of load makes little difference and I could probably run a labbed 25 Mirage+ and pick up a couple mph. Just got it completely dialed in at the end of last season and now it's for sale.
Liquid-have you tried to calculate the prop slippage? Unless I'm mistaken, that prop is hooking up pretty well. Any of the good prop sites will have a calculator that you can use.
The only thing that bothers me is that you are running high 60's with 415hp. Now, I don't know the boat, but I'd expect you to be in the low 70's with that power. How much trim are you feeding the boat? My old boat thrived on trim. The more I gave it, the faster it would run. People can talk all they want about the optimum drive angles and heights, but honestly, what does the hull want? |
cord- prop slip is about .10, what does this mean? It dosent seem to trim much, and I have freinds with the same boats ''stock'' are they lying or do you really think they run 72-73 on gaffrig speedo?
Liquid, your friends are probably telling the truth about what there speedo's say, but they aren't going that fast. Actual speed with that hp in a 24 Outlaw will be around 65mph. It will take 500hp to break the 70mph mark. Also, my prop slip is about 13%. What that means is that a 23" prop will move 23 inches forward with one rotation and pushing nothing. If its slipping 13% then you are losing 13% of that 23 inches.
Griff , I borrowed a 25'' mirage non plus picked up 1-2 mph at 4700rpm do you think having that prop ''labbed'' would do the trick
