Vinyl graphics removal?
ANy thoughts how to get them off?
The graphics is 12 years old and it's like trying to peel off paint. Help. Thx. P |
Heat gun & soft plastic scraper. The motorcycle stores have a decal-removal product that works OK. Goof-off will also soften the glue.

CS has the right idea!! In addition something that is inexpensive to aid the process is Naptha... You can get it at Home Depot or your local hardware store and it will help soften the adhesive and will not harm paint or gelcoat... It is about $14 a gallon and is a great chemical... Beware while using the heat gun, possibly only while the surface is warm... It's flamable... Hope this helps!!

Since you live in Fl. it would't hurt to park it in the direct sunshine a few hours before you start. Every little bit helps.

if what chris said doesn't work because the decals have become to brittle you may have to resort to sanding them off.
|
The only thing is though..... nothing works on lightning bolts. Those stay on there forever. :D

THanks.
It's not brittle yet. It's the silver waves etc. that's comng off, for re-paint. |
You can also use "Graffiti Remover" for home depot. It comes in a spray can. Obviously, dont let it sit over night on the boat. It took about 5 mins of soaking on mine and them they peeled right of with a plastic squeegee.

WD-40 gets the glue off after you peel.

Hot sun and goof off always worked for me............
|
Heat gun has done the trick for me more than once!
Then solvent for glue residual. Good luck! Greg |
heat gun and WD-40 as already mentioned...we've used it to get graphics off our trucks before selling them....:drink:

Go to a napa or local paint store and ask for a 3m graphic eraser. Thee are a rubber type wheel that goes on a drill. It removes the glue as well as the graphic with NO damage to the gel. They are around $30. You will have about 1/16 the time than using Heat or chemicals.
Mac tools sells a off brand for around $20 You will be amazed at how well they work! |

Thanks..
But if I use a drill near the boat, I'll end up putting a hole in it. :evilb: WOW.. what a concept.. unforseen incident for the insurance dudes. :) All my problems are solved.. Thanks to OSO.. Now.. I just have to skip the country since the ins. Co's have a contract on my head.. after my recent claim... now holes in the hull.. |
Trust me if you end up putting a hole in the boat using the eraser you have really made a big mistake. Very easy to use and you don't use the drill straight at the boat but sideways to it.
