boat A/C question
 

My 38' scarab (1998) came with air conditioning but it is a 220v50hz system(unusable with the Honda 2000 generator I have).the unit is a 7000 btu marine air vr unit. My question is will a 5000 btu unit work ?I found a used unit and was thinking about picking it up.( I got screwed on ebay for a 7000 btu unit that I bought last October)

It will work at night , when the heat is not as intense. It will also take some time to get the temp down. I put a 5K in a friends 33 Scarab and it works well but dont think you will be happy in the 38.

Are you sure it is 220 volt ? I have never seen one with that voltage in a boat, unless it was a big cruiser.

If you boat in a hot area it won't do anything. I have a
38'donzi w/ a 12k unit and it keeps the cabin at 85 degrees on a 105 degree day.

Excursion-yes it is a 220v system. The boat was originally built for Israel. It had an Israeli wall socket (3pin) and even a Koran in the closet. Although I heard that just the circuit box may acually be 220v. I think I was told that the compressor and blower were acually 110v. I changed the water pump out for a 110v already.Boataholic- I think the Donzi has a bigger cabin also but now I know.Maybe I will expand my search to a 9-10k unit. I have to watch the watt consumption of the unit. I have a Honda EU2000i to run it.thanks Mike

Check to see if your right on being 110volt. If correct it would be easy for the box change out from 220 to 110. The cost would be little and you then can see if it will cool. Also see what amp the unit is, your gen may work.

I put a 10k btu unit in the 37 Active Thunder and it will freeze you out of there on any day, they nick-named my boat the "meat locker"
The 10k unit will not run on a EUI 2000 by itself, You will have to install a HARD START kit, it has a larger start capacitor and relay, so when the compressor comes on it discharges and has the power to start. They run about $250, you can get it from Dometic Corp.

Excursion, what model number A/C did you have. Maybe I will just pony up the money for a new 10k unit of maybe a used 9k. I have a baby due in April and it gets hot In Havasu in the summer.BTW I saw you bought a new boat congrats.Mike

220 to 110 is one thing. But if it's wired for 50hz (typical european frequency) it isn't worth fooling with. Buy the correct unit.

Okay, if that is the case you are right, I don't want to mess around. I'll just wait for a 9-10k unit.

Be sure you don't get one that is too big. If it is, it will not run very long between cycles. This would in turn lower the de humidifying benefits of your A/C system. The longer it runs the drier the air in your cabin will be.
