boat A/C question
My 38' scarab (1998) came with air conditioning but it is a 220v50hz system(unusable with the Honda 2000 generator I have).the unit is a 7000 btu marine air vr unit. My question is will a 5000 btu unit work ?I found a used unit and was thinking about picking it up.( I got screwed on ebay for a 7000 btu unit that I bought last October)
|
It will work at night , when the heat is not as intense. It will also take some time to get the temp down. I put a 5K in a friends 33 Scarab and it works well but dont think you will be happy in the 38.
Are you sure it is 220 volt ? I have never seen one with that voltage in a boat, unless it was a big cruiser. |
If you boat in a hot area it won't do anything. I have a
38'donzi w/ a 12k unit and it keeps the cabin at 85 degrees on a 105 degree day. |
Excursion-yes it is a 220v system. The boat was originally built for Israel. It had an Israeli wall socket (3pin) and even a Koran in the closet. Although I heard that just the circuit box may acually be 220v. I think I was told that the compressor and blower were acually 110v. I changed the water pump out for a 110v already.Boataholic- I think the Donzi has a bigger cabin also but now I know.Maybe I will expand my search to a 9-10k unit. I have to watch the watt consumption of the unit. I have a Honda EU2000i to run it.thanks Mike

Check to see if your right on being 110volt. If correct it would be easy for the box change out from 220 to 110. The cost would be little and you then can see if it will cool. Also see what amp the unit is, your gen may work.

I put a 10k btu unit in the 37 Active Thunder and it will freeze you out of there on any day, they nick-named my boat the "meat locker"
The 10k unit will not run on a EUI 2000 by itself, You will have to install a HARD START kit, it has a larger start capacitor and relay, so when the compressor comes on it discharges and has the power to start. They run about $250, you can get it from Dometic Corp. |
Excursion, what model number A/C did you have. Maybe I will just pony up the money for a new 10k unit of maybe a used 9k. I have a baby due in April and it gets hot In Havasu in the summer.BTW I saw you bought a new boat congrats.Mike

Okay, if that is the case you are right, I don't want to mess around. I'll just wait for a 9-10k unit.
|
Be sure you don't get one that is too big. If it is, it will not run very long between cycles. This would in turn lower the de humidifying benefits of your A/C system. The longer it runs the drier the air in your cabin will be.

This is true but also remember, most of my boating is in Havasu in the summer, where it is very dry for the most part. You could almost get away with a evaporative (swamp) cooler Mike
|
It was a Dometic Cruise Air unit, A/C only no reverse cycle heat, Was easy to install and worked GREAT!
Thanks, we cant wait for summer to try out the new boat. |

Brian41,
I am acually the guy who asked you about the Pasport I/O. I am bouncing between two options 1---your 10k unit($1000+shipping) ,a new Passport I/O unit as it is not compatible with my Passport II aparently ($200-$300) and hard start kit apparently (another $250)=about $1700.00. or trying to use a used 5k units control box (110v) that is for sale(for about $400) with my current 7k unit (which is 220v) . A guy from Dometic in Florida said that will work in an email ,I'll have to talk to him before commit thought. |
I just jumped on the 10btu unit brian had for sale on ebay. I found a passport I/O for sale and that just leaves the hard start kit. I think the 10k kits come with one, but is the $250 hard start kit an upgrade?if so what part # if possible. Mike
|
Update, I got the 10k A/C unit from member Brian41. I got a Passport I/O control panel, a hard start kit and a 15' cable from e-bay. (The cable is just for testing outside the boat, as a normal dsl cat5 cable is wired backwards.) I hooked a fan up to the circuit board to simulate the load of the water pump on the boat, and ran the the whole thing on my EU2000i . Works great AND may even run on eco mode. The boat is out getting fuel lines run right now.but will install as soon as I get it back. I may post a small video on youtube of the a/c running on my tool cart-stay tuned.Mike

How long did you let it run? The 2000 will normally run the 10k unit for about 1 hour and then the pressures build up and then it will kick out the overlaod on the gen.
You did install the HARD START kit correct? If so you can use the eco control. |
Excursion, I ran it for about 35 min.It ran fine. It did't want to restart (cycle) on Eco mode after it ran for a while though . No problem otherwise in non-eco mode. The hardstart was put in parallel with the run capacitor. I unplugged the stock start cap (tiny littly disc about 1 1/2" in diameter and 1/4' tall) as instructed by the guy at dometic but I guess I could leave it plugged in? The hard start capacitor I got was an aftermarket one(Supco SPP5).Mike

Disconnect the little stock capacitor, you do not want both inline.
You should be ok. |
That website is actually CruiseNComfortUSA.com. If anybody has any questions about our units or any A/C questions please ask.:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::blaster:

Bad Ass Industrial
What do you Know about Cruise N Comfort USA Air conditioners? |
Why not ask C N C themselves? They for one should be able to answer any questions you have.

CNC,
I checked out your site. Can you send specs on the units? Size, weight, etc. Also installation requirements/instructions. Also hit the order page to check prices and it did not display. Thanks. Jeff |
I was actually looking for some insight from someone outside the company.
I am only aware the company has been offering A/C units in 2008. Can't seem to find any feed back on them yet. The theory behind the units sounds good. |
12 Volt Air Conditioner
We have a new website that you can download specs and check out authorized dealers etc. www.cruisencomfortusa.com. For pricing you can call one of the authorized dealers on the back page like www.teamshogrenmarine, www.coldmarineair.com and others, Cruise N Comfort will also have a booth at the Miami International Boat Show Booth # 1816 in the marine accessories area main hall. If you can't find the booth please call me @ 602-284-6999. As far as questions on the units, Mark Busier did not re-invent the marine air conditioner just figured out a way to move the freon in the unit using high quality dc compressors and did it with less amp draws.
