Canvas Cleaning

Whats The Best Way To Clean The Cockpit Canvas (or Cover) Whatever You Want To Call It

i have always just put it on the grass, got out a scrub brush and use water and simple green to clean it off. once it was clean, just hang it on the line to dry.

someone probably has a better way though.

my problem is it stinks, did simple green and water help the smell too?

Perlmudder 02-13-2008 08:55 PM

we leave our boat in the water all summer and dock is a couple hundred feet offshore. our old boat use to have a red cover that got covered in bird $hit and stank. the black one we have now is a lot ebtter for some reason.

to answer your question, yes, simple green did help with the smell. its never going to smell brand new, but the smell of simple green is a lot better then the smell of bird crap and mildew.

what does your cover stink from?

How about something like Star Brite Canvas Cleaner?

Or perhaps Woolite or even just any old clothes detergent? Use a soft deck brush, scrub it, rinse it.

has anyone put water repelant on their canvas cover? looking for something besides cans of scotch guard. would deck sealant or fence sealant work in a spray gun?

Actually I am hearing that if you plan on treating your canvas with water repellant you should not clean it with a detergent. Just use a soap. Apparently the detergent somehow stays in the material and continues to clean and in the end renders the water repellant less effective.

If the cover is a Sunbrella type product go to their site and read the care instructions.
