New marine Diesel from MAN
 

I was reading Yachting and they were talking
about a new model from MAN.

The RE-550 here are the specs:

What impressed me the most was the weight at 1980# this compared to a Merc 525 at 1201# ( http://mercuryracing.com/sterndrives/hp525efi/specs.php )

You get very similar power for what is now a more and more lighter package, for a Diesel of course.

Fuel Consumption is 29 GPH compared to around 45 GPM for the 525.
Mind you the weight difference is still there but it is getting smaller and diesel reliability is a lot better not to mention the 200 hours oil change intervals as indicated in the description.

Yanmar also has some models getting leaner for diesel with the power they put out.

Anyway thought they are getting closer. So due to the weight if you can give up the last 10 MPH you'll have a MUCH cheaper to run boat that can run at 90% WOT all day with a 1000-1500 hours at least between overhaul.

I agree with you on all points except, that engine "as is" is designed for several thousand hours before rebuilds. If that engine only went 1,000hrs - 1,500hrs between majors they couldn't sell to anyone. It's intended use is no more than 1,000 hrs per year.

Bet Wiggler already has two and "they" knew about it before anyone...:evilb:

Joe, I agree with you........that Man should run at least 5000 hours before rebuild ........with recommended service.

One think people over look on these new diesel's is the fuel filtration systems required to keep them running. They will have two sometimes three filters per engine, and they all should be changed when its time to change your oil.

Diesel's are like any other engine/motor it takes time and money to deep them running right. Bottom line, you take care of them and they will last a long time.

I came across the article as well.

My only fear is if it's anything like the Man 800's I'd stay far away.. Our CEO had them in his 60 viking.... In 4 years of owning the boat he had to rebuild one of them twice and turbo problems with the both of them....low hours... They made great power but didn't last very long in "diesel" terms...

Man earned the reputation of hand grenades in my mind... :(

Your right those 800's had their share of problems, did Man stand behind them? I heard they were very good with warranty and policy but that is no substitute for having to sit at the dock on a nice day!

No, they didn't cover anything....and I think it was $40-60K a pop....:hitfan: Our corporate attorney had them in his Viking as well and had similiar problems.. They wouldn't cover anything for him either so he sued them when he had problems...

It goes to show you they only put out the "positive" news in print!

That is really bad, you wonder why the boat manufactures push them so much still?

I brought a 52' Hatteras in 1984 w/8-92's in it. We got water back up in the exhaust and bent 2 rods when we went to start it. Detroit wanted nothing to do with the claim as it was a bad installation job. Hatteras did pick-up the bill and fixed the exhaust system.

Those early 710hp engines with twin air cooled turbos were prone to trubo failure and Detroit ate 9 turbos for us even up to one year after the warranty was up.

It's all good....it's better them spending the $$ than me... Difference being they have it and I don't...:party-smiley-004::D

guys,how do you figure a Merc 600 complete with drives weights 1.267pds the Man motor only is 1.980 +++then unless I did it wrong the way you calculate power to weight ratio is way off.....
