OT: Ford big I-6 with manual tranny for towing

Was looking at a late 80's F150 with the the big I-6 motor and a manual tranny (4x4). I'm guessing the tranny or the clutch is the weak link in the drivetrain, as far as boat towing goes, even though is does have a granny gear. Anyone have experience with this drivetrain?
thx,

Those are great motors..but the later ones don,t have the power like the older ones. pulling my 23ft would barley get past 55 and that was in third gear... fourth was useless towing or not towing.. but all in all a great motor. dont pay over 3000.00
