My understanding is that Ilmor hasn't received engine #1 back yet for a rebuild (or any of the early sale engines for that matter). Still going strong @ 450hrs!!

Twins with 450hrs? That's pretty good. That's better then I figured they'd go.
I've driven an Ilmor 710 Skater & ridden in a Donzi 38 ZR w/ the Merc pkg. There's no doubt the Merc pkg is sweet, I opt for Ilmor b/c I dare to be different, know the Ilmor / Penske Racing reputation & am a stickler for top notch service. Where Ilmor may lack in years of marine experience I assure you they mack up for it in cutting edge technology. Although the Ilmor drive maybe 2yrs behind the NXT it's closer to a #6 by comparison & will be offered as a retro fit replacing a bravo. Currently the NXT is only available as a package. I know there are OSO advertisers offering the NXT drive only but I've yet to see one mated to ANYTHING other than a Merc 700. PS- be on the lookout for the Ilmor 1000!!!:party-smiley-004: |

ID,
You and I might as well just switch jobs / careers as much as we are in each others business! LOL! |

At the end of the day I think both Ilmor & Merc's packages are good values. Currently Merc has the edge w/ the ability to offer a complete package where Ilmor is having to partner up w/ Teague or IMCO.

No data is available to the public on something that hasn't been officially announced or released. Those of us that are close to Ilmor & the development of the drive are in the know & are simply sharing the intel w/ you. I have no personal gain in the release of the drive so why would I lie?? You could always call yourself & ask! 200 hrs might be a stretch for the 710's that have barely been out over a year. I'm sure there are 550's or 625's as i have 118 on mine in 1 1/2 short boating seasons. |

I like these motors but like everything time will tell. The Ilmor service center in our area is a joke..Ive had previos dealings with them and it amazes me how they became a dealer..Good luck with these motors..Keep us informed. Thanks jeff |
No one has mentioned it so I will. I heard that the Ilmors are not good for heavy v bottoms. Something to do with the torque?????????? Anyone know if it is true. Also on a side note of the Merc 700sci I was told 250-300top end and 450+ on the bottom.

The only thing I've heard on this is falls more on the drive side of things..... The motor does make quite a bit of low end torque and cant put a load on the drive.... But that's true of a lot of BBC packages too. |
Thanks for all the great info on this thread we are going to put twin 710's in the first 32' next month so this is a great post to sit and read.

Yeah we at first were going to go twin 525's just to get it on the water but got set up with the 710's. This thread is great to see what kind of things we need to watch and what we can look to get speed wise. This boat is just plane sick the true loa on it is 34 with a 123" beam so should finally see a more east coast style boat coming from a west coast builder. The 710's we hope will be the ticket but we do have alot of guys still looking at teague 900's |

50 is it............. The beauty of it, it's only like a $30 ticket no matter how fast your going. Had a buddy get pulled over last year doing 135......... $30. It is pretty gay though.... Most people looking to run upwards of a 100 are part of the "standard tool box". There more often then not seasoned to say the least. |
Congratulations on your purchase. You will very pleased with the 710's and will like the fuel economy with the rising fuel cost

I hope so......... Was running the H.O. before this and the fuel sitution wasn't bad but the boat was underpowered. Always felt like I had to run it hard to get decent speed = bad fuel economy ...... Now there's plenty of reserve. |
I love mine!

Hey speed, what setup you have??

I hear Ilmor has an Issue with........
Their water pumps not pumping enough at idle and prolonged idling (like idling through a marina in gear for a half an hour out of a marina)
I also hear they know this, and Im curious why I haven't heard about it from anyone in any thread yet. One very easy fix is supposedly to replace their pump with a Merc unit. (even better as its probably easier to find) Not sure if its the impeller or the housing is the issue.... BE nice to hear what the real deal is before I take delivery of the new ride. Ilmor dude? Didnt you call and talk to someone at the shop? I thought I heard about a Lavey boat today. We'll take care of it, if there is a problem, like we always do.
|
No, the only one I have spoken to about this is Jeff and my thread.
On the order "sheet" I requested a second complete sea pump housing and impeller, as a spare when traveling to remote places that may not have an ilmor dealership (its those places things always fail) and I was told about a mod. Call might have come from Lavey about my rig as I did check Ilmor 710 on the order sheet. Still getting over sticker shock, but am told it was an awesome choice. Jeff and Chris seem comfortable with the "fix". I was curious if others had performed this mod or had a problem. You'll love it man!! You have heard them before right?? Also, look at Southocg, he was up in the air about the V10, until he ran the boat. When she gonna be ready?
|
Not really no! Only coming in and out of the nautical in basically idling at a regatta 2 yrs ago. It sgoing to be a new experience for me.
Quent seems to be ecstatic.- and similarly experienced to myself. so thats a check. All 3 Camire brothers hailed its *****en-ness. (For the uninitiated these are 3 highly experienced men who I have respect for that also happen to be great guys- a rarity in this world) .... Although the teague 800 was also a revered package touted as incredibly powerful everywhere and doesn't break- Im worried a bit about remorse and the other 100 ponies I gave up. (Ilmors closed cooling won over 100 ponies here) buuuut- there's what Ive lived thrown in....A lifetime of rebuilding blower motors of ALL types has soured me. I was never happy until I spent nearly double the money to get the same ponies with really high end parts matched well. I prefer non blown ponys to all that air pushing BS. About 6-7 weeks if I can keep the extras list from growing into another sheet of paper. sweet.
Very sweet sound. Thanks for posting.
