No. 6 wet to dry sump and the lower
 

The question is when converting a wet six over to a dry sump six would you change the lower. This is on a #6 38 foot larry smith scarab race boat that runs 100.

Would you use same lower, spend 1800 for herring lower, or spend 4500 for mercury new lower?

Boat is not a 120-140 boat and has no handling issues.

What type of lower is on the boat now???

Have an idea of a guy I would use but any suggestions?

Craig Colabella dry sumped my 6s and changed the lowers to Hering. Even at lower speeds, I noticed an improvement in handling.

Heard may notice more of a difference on cats then Non stepped v's. Any reason you went Hering over mercury?

Went with Hering skegs because some said they handled better. I'd use the Merc housings now because they are readily available and don't have to ship housings cross country.

I was in that boat when John owned it years ago. My friends owned the old 43' Gentry Scarab at the same time. It ran 120 plus with reworked Merc 1000's and was a rocket in its day! Beautiful boat btw.

I would love to hear as much about the boat as possible. It should be delivered to me on Friday. I'm going with dry sump cyborg 1550's, dry sump the drives, rework the merc power, and maybe tweak the props

Not sure if the skeg is a necessary change at those speeds. But the dry sump saves a lot of power. A lot easier to spin 5 qts of thin oil than 16 qts of gear lube. I have used Collabella a number of times. Great to work with. Ask him about the skeg also. I know on cats it is a must at 140+ I used to run a wet sump six and old style skeg 140mph with no issues.
