Boating Death Marathon Fla.

I'm watching CNN right now and the breaking news is that a Stingray leaped into a boat where a 55 year old woman was sunbathing and killed her. They are showing pictures of the Dead Stingray in the Fish and Wildlife boat next to Officers...
This is very unfortuante, enjoying a day on the water and pass away like this...

My condolonces to the Family...

Woman dies after freak encounter with ray

Marathon Fla. (WSVN) -- A freak encounter with an eagle ray has taken the life of a boater.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the unidentified 55-year-old woman died after the large spotted eagle ray struck her, as it jumped out of the water before 10 a.m. Thursday.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Officer Jorge Pino said his department is trying to figure out what exactly happened. "We don't know if she, the victim in this case, collided with the stingray or she became startled when the stingray actually ended up in the vessel," said Pino. "But somehow she ended up dying as a result of the interaction she had with this particular stingray."

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office received the call of a woman who was injured after the ray jumped from the water and hit her in the face. Pino said that even though eagle rays are known to jump out of the water, this is a particularly strange case because the boat was in motion when the ray jumped in. "It's an unusual occurrence," he said. "It's actually uncommon that they collide with a vessel. It's not a regular thing that it occurs. We're actually astonished that this happened. Our thoughts are with the family."

The woman was visiting from Michigan and was on a boat with her family. It remains unclear if she was hit with the barb from the animal.

Her body was transported to Mariner's Hospital, where authorities hope to gain more insight into how the woman died.

Last year, famed naturalist Steve Irwin died of when a stingray's barb stabbed him through his heart while filming a documentary. On Oct. 26, an elderly man actually survived a similar hit from a stingray at Lighthouse Point after spending weeks in the hospital.

Sydwayz 03-20-2008 12:56 PM

There are several conflicting reports.

One says the barb lodged in her neck.
Another says, she was knocked backwards, and a blow to the head killed her.
Yet another report claims a child was injured as well.

Definitely a tragedy, but who knows what took place.

JB4Boyne 03-20-2008 01:03 PM

Anyone hear what part of Mi. she was from?

pkspx 03-20-2008 01:08 PM

That looks like it could be her blood all over the cleat area on the SB side of the boat. The mechanics of the injury could make sense than the stingray came over the Port side of the boat, near where it is laying, and she lept/fell back and came down near/on that cleat on the SB side. That's terrible.

Indeed. I did a search for the news story on Google, I guess these Eagle Rays like to jump out of the water. I read another article about someone else getting injured from a Ray too.

MARATHON, Fla. (AP) — Officials say a Michigan woman died after a stingray jumped out of the water and struck her in the upper body in the Florida Keys.

Wildlife officials say the spotted eagle ray hit the 55-year-old woman in the face or neck while she was in a boat with her family Thursday. Her name and hometown aren't being released yet.

Officials say it's not clear whether the animal's barb struck her, or if the impact killed her. It's also not clear how big it was.

Spotted eagle rays can grow up to 17 feet in length, weigh up to 500 pounds and have a wingspan of up to 10 feet.

They are known to occasionally jump out of the water but are not aggressive and use the venomous tip at the end of their tail as a defense mechanism.

death from ray

That is sad,

Last year in fort pierce a friend of my father inlaws who also lives in the same community went fishing,on the way home a ray jumped up while they where running at approx 30mph and hit one of the passengers so hard it knocked him backwards over the back of the boat.It also crushed the plexiglass windsheild of the center console.this happens alot.

They say the rays jump to dislodge parasites!

Donzi38ZR 03-20-2008 04:29 PM

They really dont like to jump out of the water, most of the time if they are jumping out of the water it's to get away from a predator such as a shark.

in-which case would probably be aggresive as it landed in the boat.

Tragedy, thoughts are with the family and friends.

fabin61 03-20-2008 07:51 PM

Anybody see the movie "Final Destination" ?!?!? This sounds like one of those freaky stories where she avoided death somewhere before and death came after her in a strange way.
Regardless, that is awful and feel so sad for her and her family. They will likely never boat again after something like that.

Ihad one fly in front of me in 1998 at the Miami to Key West poker run Scared the crap out of me and it was 50 yards in front of me

How scary this musta been close up

Scott B 03-20-2008 09:42 PM

D38ZR has it right.. They are not really freejumpers, but when being pursued by a predator, with sharks being the main one, they do take flight..

Prayers to the family involved. We have a place down there, I can't imagine a peaceful day on the water being shattered like that.

boatme 03-20-2008 09:45 PM

Tv news here in Michigan just said it hit her, she fell back, and hit her head

MARATHON, Fla. (AP) — A 75-pound stingray killed a Michigan woman Thursday when it flew out of the water and struck her face as she rode a boat in the Florida Keys, officials said.

Judy Kay Zagorski, of Pigeon, Mich., was sitting in a boat going 25 mph when the spotted eagle ray, with a wingspan of 5 to 6 feet, leaped out of the water, said Jorge Pino, spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The 57-year-old woman's father was driving the boat on the Atlantic Ocean side of Vaca Key, Pino said.

"He had absolutely no warning. It just happened instantaneously," Pino said.

The impact likely killed the woman, but it was not immediately clear whether she had any puncture wounds from the ray's barb, Pino said. An autopsy is planned, Pino said.

The stingray died from the impact, officials said.

Spotted eagle rays can weigh 500 pounds and have a wingspan of up to 10 feet. They are known to occasionally jump out of the water but are not aggressive and use the venomous barb at the end of their tail for defense.

The rays are protected in Florida waters and are typically seen swimming on the water's surface.

"Rays jump to escape a predator, give birth and shake off parasites," said Lynn Gear, supervisor of fishes and reptiles at Theater of the Sea in Islamorada. "They do not attack people."

glassdave 03-21-2008 05:31 PM

So sorry for all involved.

I got a call from a good friend (an X actually) earlier asking if my mom was OK. She was listening out of the corner of one ear to the news on TV and this story came on saying that a Judy Zigorski was killed in Fla. My moms name is Judy Sikorski and they are both pronounced pretty much the same, actually caught me off guard for a sec. Up until she called i didnt know the name of the victim and the thought raced through my head that something happened to my mom, than she went on to say it was this stingray story.

so sad

ebendrey 03-22-2008 09:01 PM

JB4Boyne, one of the reports said the big town of Pigeon, MI way up in the thumb.

BBB725 03-22-2008 09:07 PM

I have seen rays jump for a 5 plus years, in Mararthon, I have never seen one jump high enough till today. I saw it jump about 6 feet out of the water today, unbelievable. I guess it is possible.
